Live An Inspired Life After Study Abroad

You’re home after one of the most incredible, memorable experiences of your life. Your view of the world has shifted and you’ve changed in every way. The idea of life after study abroad might seem unimaginable. You've learned so many new things in your host country, and gained some new perspectives on life. However, many people don’t realize that returning home can be challenging. In fact, the feeling of returning home from a study abroad experience is referred to as reverse culture shock. Every person experiences a different kind of culture shock on returning home. Some may feel lonely, while others may feel disoriented and frustrated. Here are some ways on how you can live an inspired life after studying abroad.

Keep in contact with friends you made while studying abroad

The friendships that you make while studying abroad does not have to end just because you are returning home. It's worthwhile to keep those connections strong. You can continue to keep in touch with your host family and classmates by writing letters, exchanging home town gifts or by messaging or video calling them just to see how they doing. Let them know what you've been doing ever since you've got back home. You can even make plans to visit them to keep those memories alive.

Plan activities

Get involved in activities in your area; invite your friends and family to come join you. If there was a hobby you picked up abroad, continue doing it. One of the important things you may have missed while studying abroad is experiencing new activities with your loved ones. Spend time with others who share your passions by joining an international or language club. You will be amazed by how many people are interested in the same activity as you.

Continue to travel abroad

Just because your study abroad program has ended, does not mean you can't continue to travel abroad. You can sign up for a volunteer program to keep the cultural exchange flowing or take up a summer internship abroad.

Study Abroad Courses

Reconnect with old friends

Take a trip down memory lane, revisit your favourite spots with your friends and make new memories. Visit art shows, museums, and historic sights in the area. Planning a weekend away with your friends is also a great idea, this way they can fill you in on their latest news and happenings.

Study Abroad Courses

Live in the moment

Seek out adventures, visit places you've always wanted to see but never got around to. Visit friends who stay in different cities, this way you will be able to experience and explore new places. Be spontaneous, go trekking, and get up to watch the sunrise. Live in the present without thinking about your next move.

Keep learning

Maintain the same thirst for new knowledge you had when studying abroad. You can also keep yourself updated by catching up on the latest news from your host country. You can also rent some books from the library, or browse through some travel blogs. You may learn something you never learnt in the classroom. This way you can continue living your study abroad life.

Take some time to reflect

Considering study abroad programs are often fast paced, there may have been times when you couldn't process it all. All of your time spent studying abroad will leave you with a lifetime of memories, now that you are back home you can sit back, relax and reflect on your experiences.

Combine your experience with a future career

Your study abroad experience may also provide you with insight into a new career. There are a lot of jobs out there that will allow you to put your new skills to use. Employers look to hire people with real international experience. Having studied in foreign culture will awaken your senses and led you to new understandings and personal growth. Aim to combine your knowledge and experience of studying abroad, and implement them into your day to day life. It may seem daunting at first, but think of ways on how you can be beneficial to these employers, into a career that you will also find fulfilling.

Study Abroad Courses

Embrace the change in you

The most profound difference upon your return will be in yourself. There is no denying how studying abroad changes you from the person you were when you first left your home country to the person you are now. You've probably become accustomed to a high level of activity and anticipation, confronting new places, and constantly meeting new people. Embrace the change and continue being the new you.

Keep an open mind

Keeping an open mind is just what you need to have just as much fun back home as you did when studying broad. Although studying abroad is an incredible experience, the adjustment process can be a huge part about how you feel about your overall experience.

6 Biggest Hurdles To Studying Abroad And How To Overcome Them

While studying abroad certainly has its challenges, leaving your home country is your chance to gain independence and experience new things, you will be presented with new responsibilities such as paying your bills and stocking up on groceries. Although this will take some time getting used to, these skills will be beneficial and will continue to be with you all through life. Studying overseas will also give you the opportunity to meet people from different backgrounds and a chance to explore the country's culture and activities. In addition, you won’t be limited to traveling in just the country you are studying in, but you will also be able to visit neighbouring countries. Here are some of the hurdles most students face

Feeling like an outsider

When studying abroad, you may feel that your sense of fashion, your inability to communicate in the local language and your presence is different from the others, however do not let this get to you, it will only be a matter of time till you fit in. Make friends with the locals there, this way you will be able establish relationships and will start feeling relaxed in your new country.

Feeling homesick

Being homesick is a perfectly normal for a student who will be studying abroad. Alot of students feel homesick for different reasons. There are ways to deal with this, for starters you could get involved in on campus activities, it could be signing up for a sport or even joining a book club, this gives you a chance to meet new people and will also keep you from getting distracted and from feeling homesick.

Study Abroad Courses

Language Barriers

Even if your program is taught in English, it doesn’t mean you won’t have a few language barriers to overcome while exploring the city or if you are living with a local family. You will meet so many interesting people during your study abroad experience. It will make you more comfortable with the language and culture. If you are not fluent in the host country’s first language, carry around a translation dictionary or download apps related to foreign language. Befriend locals and engage in conversation with them. Making new friends and learning to communicate with each other is often one of the most memorable and rewarding parts of your experience.

Emotional Burden

You will be going through different phases during your stay in a foreign country. You will miss home and miss being away from your loved ones, however do not spend all of your time talking to friends and family back home. There are tons of people in your program, or at your school, looking for some friends as well. Invite them to grab dinner, go see a movie, or go explore the new city together.

Getting Lost

When figuring out a new city, you will inevitably find yourself in an unfamiliar place. It can even turn out to be a fun adventure. However, the first thing you should remember is to remain calm, getting all worked up will only cause panic. Try to retrace your steps, be on the look out for big landmarks, they will be visible from anywhere you stand, this will give you an overall sense of direction. You could also ask the locals, they are always more than willing to help out.

Financial hurdles

Create a budget on how much money you intend to spend while studying abroad. Don't splurge on trips or sightseeing too early, you will have plenty of time to do all of it.Write down everything that you buy, it could just be pack of chips or a bar of chocolate, Write it down! this way you will be able to budget and track your expenses every month. By comparing your expenses on a monthly basis, you will get a fair idea of where you're spending your money. Making friends in your new country can teach you insider secrets on where to shop and eat for less and activities that you can do that cost little money.

5 Common Challenges you’ll face while Studying Abroad

Studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally while going on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There are a number of other benefits to studying abroad; however, there are also numerous challenges.

What is it like for an Indian student to study abroad? The truth is, it is not very easy. However, everything that you go through is worth the effort. Most Indian students have tons of questions including minor queries and major concerns about their life in their host nation.

Here are a few challenges that you may encounter abroad:

1. Accommodation problems

Indian students may find it difficult to find suitable accommodation in a foreign location while pursuing higher studies. It may also be difficult to find accommodation that is near the university campus, has a good infrastructure and suits their budget.

2. Time zone annoyances

Trying to navigate two time zones on opposite ends of the planet can be frustrating at best. You constantly have to double check what times are appropriate for which time zone, and get in the habit of making phone calls super early in the morning or late in the evenings.Indian students may also feel home sick staying far away from family and friends.Students who are very close to their parents may find it tough to stay alone. Such students may feel lonely and will have to learn to manage their emotions in the absence of their close companions.

Study Abroad Courses

3. Financial/Monetary problems

Pursuing higher studies abroad is expensive and students may face monetary problems at some point or other. While considering the cost associated with studying abroad students have to take care of tuition costs, accommodation costs, living expenses, books, cost of traveling etc. it may also be necessary to purchase a personal computer or a laptop etc. to help oneself study. During a financial emergency, it may be difficult to arrange for necessary funds needed to take care of expenses.

Study Abroad Courses

4. Overcoming the language barrier

Indian students going to countries such as UK, US, Australia etc. where English is spoken as the first language, may find it difficult to overcome the language barrier. Students may find it difficult to speak fluently in English and at times may find it hard to clearly understand what the natives are saying. The use of English words and phrases may vary in different countries abroad. Although there are standard examinations such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS,GRE, GMAT that a student has to clear before getting admitted in a foreign university, matching the pace, accent and tone of the foreign counterparts may be challenging.

5. Living an independent lifestyle

For an Indian student it may be difficult to manage the entire cooking, cleaning, washing etc. in the beginning unless accustomed to do these jobs along with studies. Unlike India, it is very expensive and difficult to hire help to get these jobs done. In overseas countries such as UK, USA even domestic servant charge on an hourly basis which may be very difficult to afford. Hence Indian students may face problems in managing household work with studies. However, with time the students will be able to adopt such a lifestyle and learn to commute between nations, pay bills and manage expenses by themselves.
The experience abroad for an Indian student could be life altering. One may face problems but for a short-interval of 5 to 6 months, before it becomes part of their daily routine.

How To Avoid Feeling Homesick While Studying Abroad

No matter how excited you may be about college life, even the most independent freshmen can find themselves struck with homesickness. Moving away from home for the first time and starting fresh can take its toll. You may at times find yourself missing your bed or the posters on your wall. Homesickness can affect people of all ages in almost any situation, so don't be ashamed if you miss home. There are some measures that you can take to help deal with homesickness and learn to love your new environment.

Avoid spending too much Time in your Room

Staying in your room too much will only make you feel worse, as you’ll be pondering on what you miss about home. Try to keep yourself busy by taking part in some form of sport, studying at the library rather than in your room or even getting a part time job. Find something new to do on your own, learning a new skill can help you break out of your comfort zone.

Explore your surroundings

One of the main reasons we often feel homesick is not knowing what to do when in an unfamiliar surroundings; here is your chance to set aside some time to explore the town so you’ll feel more at home. In fact, not getting to know the city better is one of the biggest regrets most students have. Walk around, do some sightseeing or volunteer with the local community. You’re only around for a few years, so now’s the time to make the most of it

Create a list of what you can do in the area

Do a little research into the new area you live, and find a list of places to explore. You can visit that little cafe you've always wanted to go to or try that new burger joint a few blocks away. The more you learn about your area, the more familiar it will become to you. It will help you meet new people and will make you feel at home.

Study Abroad Courses

Talk with friends and family back home

Whether it’s a phone call or a text message keeping in touch with your friends and family will make you feel that you are part of things back home. Remember you need to be doing fun stuff in between as well so you have stories to tell people back home.

Maintain a journal

Keeping a journal will help you get in touch with your thoughts and process everything that is happening in your new environment. Whether you're studying abroad, in college or just moved to a new city, you will likely be experiencing new and unfamiliar sensations, keeping a journal can help you keep track of your thoughts. Research has shown that maintaining a journal can help relieve feelings of homesickness.

Do things you enjoy

Whether you’re a writer, dancer or a musician don’t stop doing the things you enjoy. It is important to set aside time for yourself especially when you are in the middle of a big change. Doing things you love will help you focus and destress.

Meet new people

A great way to meet new people is by getting involved on campus. Whether you'll share the same class together or are seated at the same table in the cafeteria, you will meet students going through the same transition of living in a new place just like yourself. Keeping yourself busy helps take your mind off of being homesickness.
