Writing a Personal Statement for Studying Abroad

If you're planning on a study abroad program at an undergraduate or post graduate level, you will be required to write a statement of purpose. Personal statements are one of the most crucial parts of your study abroad application; it demonstrates your ability to effectively write and communicate in English and plays a significant role in the admissions decision making process.
When writing your personal statement, it is extremely important that you do not include anything that isn't true, rather discuss what is important to you and the ambitions that you have. Remember this is your chance to stand out from the other applicants.
Every admissions office will have certain instructions when it comes to writing one, however, before you begin, it is important to note what these instructions are.
Mentioned below are some important points to keep in mind when drafting an essay.
  • Take Your Time.
  • When writing your personal statement, ensure that you take your time. Create a draft of what you wish to include, this will help you organize your thoughts. Rushing the process can lead to errors, your best ideas will come to you with time.
  • Paragraphs.
  • While writing, be sure to structure your paragraphs. Writing your personal statement in paragraph form makes it more readable. The strategy here is to have a powerful introduction so the reviewers take notice. The admissions committee want to hear your story and this is your chance to make it a compelling one. Your goal here is to make yourself memorable.
  • Focus On Your Strengths.
  • When drafting your statement of purpose, focus on your strengths. In addition to writing about your passions, you can also discuss how past experiences have helped you grow into the person you are today. Be sure to also include why you should be accepted and what you will bring to the program. Your positive attitude will be highly regarded by the university admissions.
  • Mention What You've Done Outside The Classroom.
  • Write about any extracurricular activities you may have actively been involved in. For eg, be sure to include any volunteer work or work experience in your statement. This shows how relevant your experiences are to the ambitions you now have.
  • Plagiarism- Don't do it.
  • Your personal statement should contain your own work, this means you should not under any circumstances copy material from other sources. Passing off someone else's work as your own is plagiarism and your application can get rejected.
  • Proof Read.
  • It is very important that you set aside time to proof read your essay before you submit it. This way you can check for any grammatical errors you may have made while writing. You can also have your friends and family read it, they will be able to provide you with some valuable feedback.

7 Ways To Save Money Whilst Studying Abroad

Studying abroad provides you with valuable insight into the world. It not only enhances your survival skills, but also gives you the opportunity to experience a new culture. While an overseas education does not have to cost you a fortune, there are things you can do during your time overseas that will make your study abroad experience both affordable and worthwhile.

Mentioned below are several ways you can save money while Studying Abroad.

Avoid Frequent ATM Withdrawals

ATM withdrawals come with a transaction fee, and a great way of saving money is to look for a bank that doesn't charge you an ATM fee every time you make a withdrawal.

Save Money Whilst Studying Abroad

Make Use of Public Transportation

One way of saving money while Studying Abroad is by making use of the public transportation facilities that are available to you. Public transportation is a much more feasible option when studying abroad, avoid using taxis and opt for using the subway or the bus instead. Cycling is another fun way of traveling around; it gives you the chance to explore the city.

Cut Down On Your Calling Expenses

Using prepaid calling cards to get in touch with your family and friends back home can be expensive, especially when you are trying to cut down on expenses. There are several video and internet calling services that you can use that are not just cheaper, but also cost efficient.

Avoid Eating Out All The Time

Avoid eating at restaurants all the time; this will surely burn a hole into your pocket sooner than expected. Home cooked meals are nutritious and healthy, and will help you save money during your time abroad. Buying your groceries in bulk will keep you from making multiple trips to the grocery store and will also save on travel costs.

Don't Buy Things On Impulse

You may find yourself buying things you don't need. Avoid doing this, and only buy items that are an absolute requirement. Buying things on an impulse will leave you with a long bill by the end of the month.

Save Money Whilst Studying Abroad

Make Use Of Student Discounts

Your student ID comes with its share of benefits. There are certain privileges that you can enjoy by just being a student in a foreign country. Student IDs can earn you a discount while visiting certain tourist attractions, and can also gain you free access to museums. There are also discounts you can avail at libraries, restaurants and movie theatres.

Maintain A Budget And Stick To It

When studying abroad, ensure that you maintain a budget and keep to it, noting down your expenses for the entire month will help you keep track of your spending. Make budget cuts where you can and ensure that you keep aside some extra money incase of emergencies.
