Things To Remember When Traveling Abroad For Studies

September 2018
Planning to study abroad? That doesn't mean you can't kill it with an incredible backpacking trip. You need to play it smart, though; finding ways to cut corners and watching your wallet very carefully to maximize this adventure. The best part about backpacking is that you make the rules, but you need to hit a few checkpoints first. There are always a few important items that could slip your mind when packing for abroad. While you were choosing your trendiest outfits to fit in with the locals, you probably forgot to pack a universal adaptor to use when you travel on the weekends; forgetting that not every country in Europe takes the same type of plug. Here's a list of smart things to get for study abroad that you'll be happy you picked up before you hopped on your flight.

Study Abroad - Things to remember

Here are few tips which will make your studying abroad easy:-

  • Paper Work in Place

Get your passport as early as possible, and apply for your visa(s) on time if you're wondering "Visa? What visa?" please open a new tab and look up your chosen country and whether do you have a passport, double and triple check the expiration date. Make sure it will last you well beyond your semester abroad.

  • Health Check-Up

Your doctor might recommend you visit a travel clinic, where you'll find out exactly what you'll need to stay healthy. Contact your health insurance company to let them know where and when you'll be traveling and request your prescriptions in advance.

  • Bank Visits

Meet with your bank to find out how your credit and debit cards work overseas. Some banks will have their own, hassle-free ATMs in your area, and some might have regional partners that don't charge a fee for withdrawing cash. If you belong to a smaller bank that doesn't have an international presence, plan for that. Lean on a traveler's credit card as much as possible, and only take out cash when absolutely necessary.

  • Appropriate Clothing

Do some research about the country you're headed to. Check the weather, the dress code (if any) at your in-country school, and definitely find out what kind of clothing is culturally appropriate. It's always a good idea to keep a multipurpose scarf on hand to cover your shoulders in case you want to wander into a cathedral in Italy, or a Buddhist temple in Sri Lanka.

  • Currency Exchange

When deciding where to study abroad, many students consider daily expenses, but some of the cheapest countries to visit are also the least stable. Don't assume that the US dollar will have the same value when you're studying abroad as it did when you checked the exchange rate five months ago, especially if your country has a particularly volatile economy. Even small changes can make a big impact when you're budgeting for months instead of days, and you could suddenly find yourself spending Western Europe money in what you thought was a friendly destination.

Your Study Abroad Checklist + Tips to prepare

September 2018
How exciting it is to study and live abroad. You're signing up for one of the most interesting adventures of your life. That's for sure. But in order to fully enjoy your experience; you 'll do well by heeding a few tips. Some are essential but others are strongly recommended suggestions. And the sooner you start to plan, the better. Making sure items on your study abroad to-do list don 't pile up ensures a smooth transition from here to there. Studying abroad is an amazing experience, but getting ready for the big trip can be hectic and overwhelming. Don 't panic if you don 't know what you need to do before studying abroad.

Tips:-

You must have a valid passport to travel and study abroad. If you already have one, be sure to double check that it's not expired. Also, make sure that you have blank pages in your passport if you've travelled abroad before. For passport newbies can directly apply for a new passport at selected post offices, federal or state courts of records, or at a State Department passport agency. It can take anywhere from 6 to 12 months to get a passport, so make sure you start on this one well in advance.

If you are planning to go abroad, it is very useful to get a local number. Most phones are locked by default by the carrier. It is strongly recommend to ask your carrier company from your country to unlock your phone. They are obligated to do it without charge, but be aware that it would take more or less one week, so plan it in advance.

Often, if applying for an undergraduate degree at an accredited university, the school will assist with the student visa process. This is not always the case however, so make sure to ask. If no help is offered, get straight onto the job of securing your student visa yourself. To do this you will need to contact the embassy or consulate of your country of study and may need to attend an appointment as part of your student visa application. Here you’ll be asked to bring documentation such as a university letter of approval, the aforementioned valid passport, proof of funds, and, occasionally, a return ticket for your journey home at the end your studies.

Make sure you've included the contact information for people like your mentors and teachers at your host university, the emergency services number in your host country and it probably wouldn't hurt to keep the contact details of your classmates and friends abroad. Create a list of emergency contacts and keep this list handy at all times (keep a copy of this list with your important documents too). Also include the number for your bank to report lost and stolen credit cards. And pre-organize how you will stay in touch with home while abroad: ie will you use a local cell phone, Skype, email etc.

Carrying the local currency is a must, but make sure you don't rely solely on cash or withdraw large amounts of cash at a time. When converting your money make sure to do it before getting to the airport, where exchange rates are not the best. This can often be done through your local bank, travel agents, post office, some supermarkets or even a specialist online provider. To get the best rates, price comparison websites such as super market can help. As well as cash, you should also have a bank account which you can access abroad with a cash card or credit card, through local ATMs or an international bank branch. Most major banks are internationally recognized, but you will often be charged a small fee every time you withdraw money or pay with your card. Make sure your card is valid for the duration of your trip.

Extra Help: College Admissions

September 2018
Being well-rounded can give you an edge when competing for at spot at universities around the country. As you prepare to apply for college, good grades and high test scores are important, but there are other ways to show admissions officers that you're the right fit. In a world where there are scores of high school seniors applying to schools, many of which are becoming increasingly demanding, it's important to give yourself an edge. When you consider that some students might have good GPA, it becomes even more vital to show that you are more than just a number.

Here are few tips which will help you to get things easier for the admission process:-

Financial aid is more available and more abundant than a lot of families realize. Many of the country’s most elite and most expensive colleges are extremely generous with need-based financial aid, and there is scholarship money, both merit and need-based, waiting for students and families willing to seek it out and apply for it. Students might be surprised at what they can afford. At both state and private universities, legacy status which can mean different things depending on the institution, including students whose grandparents, parents, and/or siblings attended the school for either undergrad or graduate school or other alumni connections in no way guarantee admission, and students and their parents should set their expectations according to how qualified the student is for the school on their own, not how many family members attended there or how much money they give to the school each year. Schools have too many students with connections to the university to accept them all.
With early decision, colleges understand they are requiring a commitment and thus recognize early devotion to their school. Applicants should understand that the pool of applicants is smaller if and when they are able to apply early decision. Many college students are afraid to commit to one school and/or are afraid, or unprepared, to commit too early. If an applicant is sure of and committed to a university, taking the plunge and applying early decision can boost the odds of admission simply with the pool of students being lower. Colleges and universities care a great deal about their yield because it has an impact on their prestige, planning, and finances; students who apply early decision have committed to the institution and that helps institutions boost their yields.
Your letters of recommendation can give your college application an edge as well. Build relationships with the advisers and organization leaders that head up programs you're involved with. These relationships will help them provide a comprehensive view of your strengths and abilities in their letters. Students should do the same with their teachers, so admissions officers can get an idea of how you behave inside and outside of class. Your letters of recommendation should focus on how you accomplish your schoolwork, excel in your extracurricular activities, and describe how you interact with other students etc.
