Documents To Be Presented When One Embarks On Their Study Abroad Journey

In today's times, ample opportunities are available for international students in foreign countries. Thus, many students from across the globe aim to study abroad in order to boost their living standards and take their careers to new heights. Going to another country to pursue higher education is a challenging and daunting task mainly due to various family and personal reasons. Nonetheless, the moment one realizes the amenities and facilities available in the other country, there remains no reason why not to travel to a foreign country.

One is met with multiple advantages when one embarks on his/her journey to study abroad. He/she meets a diverse range of people and makes new friends, gets immersed in a new and completely different culture, learns a new language, is able to visit astounding places, discovers new and exciting foods, and most importantly becomes independent and self-reliant.

Before making your study overseas journey a memorable and enduring experience, there are multiple things or factors to consider. International students have to take charge and are required to acquire information concerning all documents that are needed to file for a student visa. Only after fulfilling the college or university requirements, one is eligible to embark on his/her study abroad journey.

To make your journey a success, the following are the required documents:

Application Form: The most crucial document that contains personal as well as professional details of the student, the Application Form pertains to that specific college or university that the student is applying to. The student is required to fill in the application form carefully with the correct information before forwarding it to the college or university. One should double-check before submitting the form. This makes it easier for the Admissions Officer to go through the student's application.

Test Scores: At majority of the universities and colleges abroad, English is the medium of instruction, and therefore, to ensure that the student can speak, read and write in English apart from being able to converse, they demand the English Language Proficiency i.e. the IELTS or TOEFL test scores. The student is required to submit these scores along with the application. These scores vary across universities and can affect the student's chances of seeking admission into his/her desired college or university.

The student might also need to appear for more general standardized tests like GRE or SAT depending on his/her country and university choice.

Academic Transcripts: The student is required to submit their academic records along with the application form. It is the same as the consolidated mark sheet that we receive in India comprising all the courses undertaken by the student, grades obtained, credits, and degrees earned. One pursuing postgraduate programs should submit their SSC (Senior Secondary Certificate), HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate), and the Graduation Degree Certificate, along with the required mark sheets.

Curriculum Vitae (CV): The Resume/CV is one of the most important documents to be submitted. It contains information about the student's educational background, internships or work experience, extracurricular activities, degrees, skills, etc., and is used to seek admission or to secure a new job. The Resume or Curriculum Vitae provides a comprehensive insight into the student's academic and professional profile. The university or college takes into consideration the presentation skills and the manner in which one performs during an interaction over a video conference call. Based on the resume put forth by the candidate, this discussion takes place.

Statement of Purpose: The most important document of one's application, the SOP is a short essay written by the student. It describes the student's background, the reason for them wanting to pursue that particular course, their desired university, and their future aspirations. The university wishes to know why the student has selected their campus to study the said program. A well-written SOP paves the way for a student's entry into his/her dream university and thus, the student should invest ample time in writing the essay to make his/her application stand out from the crowd. It evaluates the capabilities of a prospective student in terms of critical thinking, analytical abilities, aims, interests, and future goals. The SOP should be short, to the point, and ideologically clear.

Passport Size Photos and Photo Identity: Pan card, Driving License, or Voter's ID are the different photo identity documents that are needed for the purpose of identification and proof of residence. Student's also required to send a clear picture with a certain background as demanded by the university or college. All instructions given by the institute should be met.

Letter of Recommendation: LOR is also known as a Reference Letter. It is written on behalf of the student by either the student's Manager or Professor, as requested by him/her. Here the writer talks about the qualities of the person, his/her skills, characteristics, and experience based on the individual's ability to perform a given task. The writer also testifies the individual's contribution to the workplace or college. The LOR relates to admission to higher education institutes, scholarship, or employment eligibility. The Admission Committee gains an insight into the individual's life and can decide one's admission subsequently through the Letter of Recommendation.

Work Experience Certificate: The student's pertinent work experience certificates need to be attached. This plays an important role in making the student better understand the program and the experience gained, adds more weightage. A student intending to pursue MBA should submit his/her work experience details along with the necessary documents. The work experience documents include: Latest Joining Letter, Latest Salary Slip, and Employment Certificates from previous Companies or Employers.

Travel and Financial Documents: Students should possess a valid passport and study visa to be able to travel to their preferred destination. They should show proof of funds that state that they can take care of themselves in case of an emergency. Few documents need to be sent within the time frame prescribed by the university/college.

What Our Edwise Student Has To Say:

"I am writing this testimonial to Edwise International and especially to my tutor for PTE. I was tense before giving my PTE exam because I got my passport late and I had to clear the exam in a single attempt. I explained the situation to her. She helped me a lot. Those two sessions were really very crucial for me as I scored 77/90 in PTE with 90/90 in speaking. This score has also helped me in getting a part time job in Australia as well. My tutor was very calm, understanding, I am really thankful to Edwise and for the overall experience with a Coaching Dept."

The Beans To Score 8+ Band In IELTS Spilled!

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most acknowledged international standardized tests of English language expertise for non-native English language speakers. The proficiency in the English language among non-native English-speaking applicants is tested by gauging the potential to perform in four sections: writing, reading, speaking, and listening skills. IELTS is assessed on a scale of 0-9. Students are scored individually for all four sections, and then these scores are averaged for a total IELTS score.

An exemplary IELTS score is essential to turn your study abroad dream true. Achieving an IELTS band of 8 and above is of great value. However, most test-takers slip up on the fact that IELTS is a test of one’s English with no tricks, cheats, or shortcuts. You solely have to have a certain level of English ability.

How is the IELTS scored?

The IELTS grades are summed up and averaged to give an overall score. The overall score is rounded to the nearest half-point. Note that the grade will be rounded up rather than down.

What is an IELTS Band 8?

A band 8 candidate is a “very good user” of English. The British Council states that a candidate scoring band 8 and above have a fully operational command of the language with only occasional unsystematic inaccuracies and inappropriate usage who handle complex detailed argumentation well.

How to score 8 bands + in IELTS Exam?

All four sections (Listening | Reading | Writing | Speaking) are of equal importance and play a vital role in the computation of the overall IELTS score. One needs to ace all four sections to secure IELTS band 8 or more.

1. Acing the Listening Section:

i) Vocabulary is the key to excel in the listening section. Read as many references as possible. Inculcate the habit to write down the quirky terms you come across, to help you recall them throughout the test.

ii) Pay heed to the flow of the spoken material’s content with an attempt to summarize the material provided. Pen down the main ideas and write the primary synopsis with that outline. Rehearse regularly to get an idea of how to better understand each spoken word.

iii) Pay heed to words throughout the entire passage stipulating a definite portrayal. The most important portions to be identified are introductions, major steps, ideas, and conclusions. Develop a comprehension to decipher the flow of the spoken content.

iv) As a test tasker, it is of prime importance to be well versed in assessing the purpose of the speech or the conversation.

2. Nailing the Reading section:

i) Time management is one of the most important parts of this test. A strict time limit tests your abilities to complete each task timely. Quick reading ability will help you find the answers enabling you to scan the passage quickly.

ii) Skimming is the basic strategy of reading a paragraph in order to answer the questions. Scanning is the basic ability to locate every information quickly. Always skim-read the passage in 3 to 4 minutes and mark the relevant parts and keywords while reading the passage.

iii) There are approximately 16 questions grouped into three categories: local, global, and cluster. This knowledge will not only save time but will also assist in providing accurate answers.

iv) Strong grammar can help in identifying the proper solution in a short amount of time.

v) Every query contains a set of keywords that are to be fully used in order to get an answer.

3. Acing the Writing Section:

i) Provide the perfect answer to the question that is easy to read. The distinctiveness of your responses and a full-proof approach will become one of the most important factors in your overall test score improvement.

ii)  Write a descriptive paper while keeping the word count and fulfilling the goal of writing fewer words.

iii) Expand your lexical. Inculcate new vocab as the test assesses your overall ability to capture English

4. Nailing the Speaking Section:

i) Place emphasis on flawless pronunciation and not on the accent because the examiner understands that you are not a native English speaker.

ii)  Speak confidently, without hesitation, and avoid using fillers to make a significant difference in your total score. To make your answer stronger, try to avoid fillers and jargon, instead use idioms and phrases.

iii)  Pronouncing a word flatly or monotonously makes the examiner miss out on important information. Proper speaking techniques, emphasis on keywords, and voice modulation help create a lasting impact on the examiner’s mind.

Secrets To Winning Study Abroad Scholarships

Getting a degree from an international institution can open up lucrative global career opportunities by giving candidates holistic education. Studying at an eminent university abroad is an expensive affair but that should not hinder one’s aspirations of pursuing one’s dream education. Universities offer help in the form of scholarships which can range from 5%-100%. There are several scholarships that you can apply to, regardless of your background and interests.

Candidates from all across the globe apply for scholarships but only a handful ever get it. When applying for a scholarship, it is vital that one presents an impressive application.

There are certain things you as a student can do to ensure that your scholarship applications don't fail you. Here's how you can ace your scholarship application.

1. Be the early bird

The earlier you start, the less risky it is for you to miss the deadline. You will also have more time in hand to perfect your application. Scholarship winners do say the early application was crucial for their success.

2. Conduct thorough groundwork

Listing out which scholarships and institutions suit your interests, achievements, and academic record requires you to research for them in detail. This can help you in finding the right scholarship for a quality overseas education that you deeply desire. If you are sure of the university of enrollment, then the institution’s website is a good place to start your scholarship search. Generally, the university’s website gives a lot of resources on scholarships, financial aid, and other funding.

3. Pay close attention to the application essay

Writing a scholarship essay might be time-consuming, but it is an useful tool to exhibit your story and mention why you deserve the scholarship. The scholarship application should reflect your personality and authentic voice. Be sure to mention the special things about you, like any hardship that you went through and how you overcame it. Identify all the keywords and take time to understand them and strictly stick to the question when you answer.

4. Proofread the application

It is highly suggested to always proofread the scholarship application multiple times. Scholarship applications always have a scope of improvisation after someone passes a critical eye over them. Apart from helping to identify typing errors or other errors, constructive feedback helps you introspect your relevant strengths and achievements.

5. Time management

Time management is especially critical if you have multiple scholarship applications to submit. Some students in the haste of application submission, end up submitting incomplete applications. Make a calendar of all the deadlines and give yourself plenty of time to work on each one.

6. Apply

There is no limit on the number of scholarships you can apply for. Apply to the maximum number of scholarships that you are eligible for. The more you apply, the more there’s a possibility that you’ll get one!

7. Do not lose hope

Do not stop applying. You might face rejection from one organization, but do not lose hope. it’s important – and worthwhile – to keep on applying. You never know which scholarship application will be the one that succeeds.

Listed below are a few Edwise students who were awarded scholarships.

1. Our Student Kritibha Rai has received a Government of Ireland International Scholarship for MSc Actuarial Science FT at University College Dublin, Ireland in the academic year 2014/15. This scholarship entitled her to a full tuition fee waiver and a €10,000 stipend for up to one academic year.
