The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a standardized test jointly conducted by British Council, Cambridge English Language Assessment and IDP Education. It is used to test and certify the proficiency of non-native English speakers. The IELTS has two training modules: Academic and General. Candidates who wish to study at an undergraduate or post graduate level can give the Academic module, while candidates who wish to migrate to an English speaking country or wish to train or study at below degree level can give the General training module. Test Content and Scoring Pattern

IELTS and PTE have similar test sections on Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. However, there are certain features in the content pattern that differentiates them from each other.

The IELTS is a paper based test. In the Speaking section on the IELTS, the candidates are evaluated in a face to face conversation with the examiner. There is a choice of Reading and Writing tests according to whether a candidate is taking the Academic or General module, all candidates take the same Listening and speaking tests. The writing section of the Academic module uses diagrams, graphs or charts in Task 1, and candidates are asked to present the given information in their own words. In Writing Task 2, candidates are presented with a point of view or argument. They are assessed on their ability to present a solution to the problem and justify an opinion. Task 2 for both the modules are the same

In the writing section of the General module, task 1 requires candidates to respond to a given situation with a letter requesting information or explaining the situation

The PTE is a computer based test, and tests a combination of skills required in an academic setting. On the Speaking section, candidates have to speak into a microphone, while the computer captures the audio

Availability of Test Dates

PTE is based on an automated scoring, and grades a test taker in the range of 10- 90. The PTE Academic scores are available online within five business days.PTE Academic test centers are located in over 50 countries worldwide and can be taken on any date of the year, subject to availability of seats in the desired centre

IELTS is scored on a band of 0-9, and results for the test are available in 13 days. Academic and General tests have pre-fixed dates in more than 900 centres spread over 130 countries.

TAKING THE PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH ACADEMIC- THE SMART OPTION

The PTE academic is an international computer based English language test. It measures the English language ability and can be used to apply to educational institutions, professional and governmental organizations. The test is accepted in 3000 courses worldwide UK, Australia, USA, etc. The test uses task based questions, that involves using more than one language skill together, for instance listening to a lecture and taking down notes. PTE Academic reflects this through its 20 task types, each of which tests a combination of skills. For example one task type tests your understanding of an image by asking you to describe and explain what you see in the image

At the beginning of the test you will be asked to introduce yourself, you will have 30 seconds to record your introduction. This personal introduction will not scored, but it gives the admissions officers an impression of you as a person. Your introduction will be sent along with your score report to the institutions that you choose

The test is divided into three main parts and lasts for approximately three hours with an optional break of ten minutes:

•     Speaking and Writing
•     Reading
•     Listening

Strategies For the Test

   1. When you Speak, make use of the preparation time, and begin speaking only when you see the status bar change to recording. Be clear and loud when you speak
   2.When Writing, ensure that you manage your time properly, how much time should you spend on planning, writing and proof reading your work
  3.When you begin with the Reading part, always read the question before you read the passage. This will help you with the information that you are looking for. If you come across a word that you do not understand in the question, check to see if it has been explained somewhere in the passage
  4.In re-order paragraphs section, use the key words to help you decide on the main topic. Use pronoun and linkers to make connections between sentences, which will help you work out the right order
  5. When Listening, listen for the ideas not just words or synonyms. Be alert and attentive as you listen

GRE Vs SAT

While the GRE and the SAT both measure reading, writing and mathematical skills, there are a number of key differences between the two tests. The most significant difference is how the tests are used. The GRE is required for admission to most graduate schools, while the SAT is used when applying to undergraduate schools. The GRE tests the progression, over the course of your undergraduate studies, of the college-level skills that the SAT initially evaluated. Both the GRE and SAT scores are valid for a period of 5 years.

Sections of the Test

The GRE Revised General Test has three main sections: Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning and Analytical Writing. Similarly, the redesigned SAT has four tests, with the essay being optional. The three tests that everyone takes are the Reading, Writing and Language and Math. The SAT begins with the Reading, followed by the Writing and Language, Essay and Math. The GRE also begins with the Analytical Writing section, but it includes two essays that involve analyzing an issue and analyzing an argument. The following sections include two on Verbal Reasoning and two on Quantitative Reasoning

Scoring

The redesigned SAT includes two section scores; Evidence based Reading and Writing which combines the results on the Reading test and the Writing and Language Test and the second is Math which combines the results on the calculator and no calculator math sections. Each of the two sections score between 200 to 800. Essay scores are reported separately and will not be included in the section scores. Your total score will range from 400 to 1600. In addition to the total score and section scores, the redesigned SAT will report three test scores that will range from 10 to 40. If you opt for the optional Essay, you will receive three separate essay scores: Reading, Analysis and Writing.

Unlike the paper-based SAT, the GRE is a computer-adaptive test, meaning that your performance affects the questions you see on the test. There are two scored sections each of critical reading and math, and the difficulty of the second section in each depends on your performance in the first. To get the highest possible scores, you must perform well on the first section to access the highest-difficulty questions. The GRE reports three scores, one for each of its sections: math and verbal on a scale of 130 to 170, and the essay-based analytic score between 0 and 6. The math and verbal scores are based on the number of questions correctly answered and converted to the scaled score based on the difficulty of the questions.

Strategies for GMAT Exam

The GMAT is a computer adaptive test and is used to measure your ability to think systematically using the knowledge and skills you have acquired throughout your schooling years. It is further divided into three sections, a Writing section that consists of one analysis of an argument essay, the new Integrated Reasoning section, a Quantitative test and a Verbal test. You can take an optional five minute break between each section

The Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency areas of the GMAT require knowledge of mathematical principles, including understanding the fundamentals of algebra, geometry, arithmetic and the ability to interpret graphs. The quantitative section of the GMAT is composed of both data sufficiency and problem solving questions



Test- Taking Strategies

    Remember to spend more time with the first initial questions, as these questions set the level of difficulty for the remaining test
    Ensure that you finish each section, the GMAT will not penalise you for a wrong answer, so if you are running out of time, take a guess on the final questions
    Keep track of your time and the number of questions left to be answered
    Remember that you cannot go back to the previous question, so confirm your answer only when you are confident
    Once you confirm a section exit, you cannot go back. Do not click on the quit test command unless you want to end the session

Strategies for the Quantitative section

Problem Solving

There are a few problems in the GMAT that test your basic mathematical skills. Some of these problem solving questions will involve your understanding of mathematical concepts. Many problems will require you to integrate different mathematical ideas or translate a verbal problem into a mathematical one in order to find the solution. Given below are some tips that can be used for problem solving questions.

•     Carefully budget your time, to ensure that you finish the test
•     Read the question carefully, and be sure that you answer the question that is asked
•     Be familiar with your answer choices before you begin to work on a problem
•     Use your laminated note board to work out problems
•     Keep track of the units in a problem, make sure that your answer has the correct units
•     Use numerical values to find answers that involve formulas and variables
•     Translate the information you are given into numerical or algebraic equations to start working a problem

Data Sufficiency

For a Data Sufficiency type of question, you will be asked a question and, will then be given two additional statements. You must decide whether the additional statements give enough information to answer the question. These questions in turn do not have the same testing skills as problem solving. Mentioned below are some strategies that can be used for data sufficiency problems

•     Do not try attempting any data sufficiency problems, if you do not understand the directions
•     If the information given shows that the statement is false, you have enough information to answer the question
•     Do not waste time calculating the exact answer to these type of questions, once you find the answer, choose the correct option
•     Understand and use the strategy discussed previously
•     Use the strategy to make smart guesses on questions you cannot answer, and move on to the next question
•     Never make additional assumptions

IELTS Vs TOEFL

Students who study abroad get the opportunity to take a class that may not be offered in India. If your native language isn't English, you’ll almost always be required to take an English language proficiency test as part of your application to study abroad at an English speaking university. The two most accepted English language tests worldwide are the International English Language Test System and Test of English as a Foreign Language. Whilst both accurately test your level of English, the two tests differ in their approach, structure and teaching criteria, so you should carefully choose your test as per your university requirement



An Introduction

Test of English Language as a Foreign Language, or popularly known as TOEFL, measures the examinees’ ability to use and understand English at the university level. It scales how well one can combine the Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills to perform academic tasks. The TOEFL iBT has more than 50 test dates per year. TOEFL scores are accepted in more than 9,000 colleges, agencies and other institutions in over 130 countries. You can retake the test as many times as you wish, but you cannot take it more than once in a 12-day period. If you already have a test appointment you cannot register for another test date that is within 12 days of your existing appointment. In India, the registration fee is $170

IELTS or the International English Language Testing System is a standardized English Language Proficiency Test jointly owned by British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge English Language Assessment. IELTS score is accepted as evidence of English language proficiency by over 8,000 organisations globally. The test is conducted at more than 900 test centres and locations across more than 130 countries. The registration fee is INR 11,100

General Differences

The TOEFL and the IELTS both TOEFL exam questions are almost entirely multiple choice, whereas IELTS requires you to respond to a range of different question types such as short answer, fill in the blanks and short essay tasks. The IELTS is shorter than the TOEFL exam, taking approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes, whereas the TOEFL takes 4 hours to complete

There is only one type of TOEFL exam that is done entirely on the computer, whereas there are two types of IELTS that are both completed on paper, the Academic IELTS exam for students, who wish to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies, and the General Training exam for candidates who wish to meet immigration and occupational requirements

Scoring

The speaking and writing sections of the TOEFL are graded based on how they appear as a whole, which includes your range of vocabulary, writing style and grammar. Those of the IELTS are based on separate grades of individual criteria such as your use of logic, cohesion, grammar and fluency.

The IELTS is graded on a band system from 1-9, with your overall score being an average of your separate scores in all four tests. Institutions considering your application are advised to look at both the overall band score and the bands for each component in order to determine whether you have the language skills needed for a particular course of study. TOEFL is a single test that is graded out of 120, with each of the four sections scored out of 30

STUDY THE TOEFL

The TOEFL is used to measure English language proficiency. Your TOEFL score will help admissions staff determine if your skills in English are sufficient for the program you have chosen. It is widely accepted all over the world and is administered in more than 180 countries. Students can use the test to study in the United Kingdom and other European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Korea, in addition to the United States and Canada.

The TOEFL is a computer based test and takes upto four hours to complete, it analyses four skills- Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. The TOEFL is scored out of 120, with each section graded on a scale of 0-30. Each score corresponds to a percentile ranking.



Reading

The Reading section includes 3 to 5 passages with 12 to 14 questions for each passage. You will have about 60 to 100 minutes to answer and complete this section. The Reading questions cover basic information skills, inferencing skills and reading to learn skills. There are 10 question types

1.     Factual information questions
2.     Negative factual information questions
3.     Inference questions
4.     Rhetorical purpose questions
5.     Vocabulary questions
6.     Reference questions
7.     Sentence simplification questions
8.     Insert text question
9.     Prose summary
10.     Fill in a table

Listening

The Listening section will have 4 to 6 lectures and 2 to 3 conversations. There will be six questions per lecture and five questions per conversation. You will have a total of 60 to 90 minutes to answer the questions. The question types on the listening section are

1.     Multiple- choice questions with more than one answer
2.     Questions that require you to put in order events or steps in a process
3.     Questions that require you to match objects or text to categories in a table

One of the questions that follow lectures and conversations will be a replay question. In replay questions, a portion of the lecture or conversation will be played again, you will then be asked a multiple-choice question about what you have just heard

Speaking

The Speaking section evaluates the English speaking proficiency of students whose native language is not English. Like all the other sections, the speaking section is computer based. You will be asked to speak on a variety of topics ranging from personal experience, campus based situations and academic type content material. This section takes approximately 20 minutes, response time for each question ranges from 45 to 60 seconds. There are 6 types of questions for this section

1.     The first two questions are Independent tasks- These tasks require you to draw upon your own ideas, suggestions and experiences while you respond
2.     The other four questions are Integrated tasks- These tasks will require you to pay careful attention to a conversation or to an excerpt from a lecture, or read a passage and then listen to a brief discussion or lecture, before you are presented with the question

Writing

The Writing section has two writing tasks: an Integrated Writing Task and an Independent Writing Task that lasts for a total duration of 50 minutes. You will be marked on your essays on how well you address the task at hand, how well organized your tasks are coupled with appropriate and detailed explanations

    Integrated Writing- This task requires you to read a passage on a given topic for 3 minutes and then listen to a lecture on the same. You will then be asked to summarize the points in the listening passage and explain how it relates to specific points in the reading passage or how it casts doubt on points made in the reading passage. You will have 20 minutes to plan and write a response, with a word count of 150- 225 words.
    Integrated Writing- This task requires you to read a passage on a given topic for 3 minutes and then listen to a lecture on the same. You will then be asked to summarize the points in the listening passage and explain how it relates to specific points in the reading passage or how it casts doubt on points made in the reading passage. You will have 20 minutes to plan and write a response, with a word count of 150- 225 words.

TOEFL Vs PTE

Ever wonder the difference between these TOEFL and the PTE English tests for university admittance? TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is currently the most common for non- native English speakers. The TOEFL is often a requirement at most colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and other English-speaking countries. In addition, government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses or scholarship programs might also require the TOEFL. Both the TOEFL and PTE are valid for two years

The Pearson Test of English Academic is recognized by thousands of universities worldwide, the most popular being the UK, Australia, the US and Canada. It is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council, similar to the TOEFL test, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) tests in all four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The scoring ranges from 10 to 90, and includes your overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores. The score is based on performance on all items in the test. The test is computer based and takes about three hours to complete; results are available in 5 working days. You may retake the test as many times as you wish to. The main differences from the TOEFL include:

The Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is created by the Educational Testing Service and is administered in more than 180 countries, making it the most accessible test in the world. Students can use this test to study in the UK and other European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, in addition to the United States and Canada. The test is scored from 0-30 in each section, on a total of 120, and takes four hours to complete. Results for the TOEFL are available 10 days after the test some tasks require test takers to combine more than one skill. Things Every Undergraduate Candidate Should Know Before Studying in UK & USA

Here is a list of things every undergraduate candidate should know before they think about whether study abroad is the right choice.

CONSISTENT MARKS Different academic criteria count in different places

UK- If you want to study in the UK, your Class 10 board marks and your predicted Class 12 board score will be taken into account for admission

USA- Those who wish to study in the USA should know that every school report card and mark sheet must be sent to the college with the application from Class 9 onward. No report card can be omitted. Board scores are also taken into consideration, but continuous assessments from Class 9 to Class 12 are important criteria for USA universities.




APPLICATION TIMING Applications must be submitted eight to ten months before the college year starts (between August and September)

UK- For most students this means that around November of the Class 12 application deadlines begin and continue through February for some colleges.

USA- The majority of deadlines are December 31 of Class 12. Being prepared for application submission takes at least six months, taking into account standardized testing (example, SAT or ACT) and essay writing. So this means in and around May of Class 11 (or 1.5 years before you will attend college), you need to be engaged in the application process, preferably with your testing completed.

NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS While experience is more important for UK colleges, extra- curricular activities are important for the USA

UK- UK colleges are most interested in whether an applicant is prepared to commit to his or her chosen course of study.

USA- USA colleges are seeking well-rounded class of students - they want the incoming batch of students to fit together like a puzzle of people with different strengths and interests who can add diverse perspectives to the campus. For this reason the application process prioritizes strong extra-curricular interests including sports, arts, music, student leadership or social service.

TESTING

UK- Depending on the course of interest, applications to the UK can require testing. You will only come to know the required tests and their timings once you have decided on your course.

USA- Only USA colleges require the SAT.
Imperial College has specific testing requirements for engineering applicants, whereas another college may not require any engineering test. Also, check English proficiency testing requirements carefully - visa processing may require it. And keep in mind that some colleges in the USA do not accept IELTS, though UK accepts only IELTS and not TOEFL.

COURSE SELECTION

UK- UK colleges are like India, students select a course and they are committed to study that subject for three years. There is no option to switch, nor are there cross-disciplinary, add-on subjects.

USA- In the USA, however, students are allowed to change their major course of study within the four years of their college education and/or add on minor subjects of study. In fact, statistics suggest that at least 80% of USA college students change their major at least once. This is allowed because often students discover course options that are more enriching than what they had originally chosen.

These points reflect the basic knowledge students and their families should have if they want to pursue undergraduate studies abroad. Beyond this, there are innumerable nitty-gritty details that need to be attended to before an application is ready. Planning ahead is t he best strategy for success.
