Aftermath of COVID-19 on university admissions in New Zealand

Universities and colleges in New Zealand are progressive in nature and are equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities. Graduating from New Zealand not only enables you to attain a globally recognized qualification but also be known as an innovative thinker. The country has a wide range of study opportunities which consist of schools, universities, polytechnics, college of education, private training establishments, and much more. To ensure that the quality of education offered at these institutions remains superior, NZQA maintains a close eye on the same.
To ensure the protection of your welfare, all education providers were required to adhere to a Code of Practice that came into force in 2002. Only those who have given their affirmation to the said code are permitted to enroll international students. The code ensures that universities and colleges in New Zealand act reasonably and fairly when admitting students. This code gives you the opportunity to trust the institution you have enrolled in.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, students are apprehensive about studying in New Zealand.

Aftermath
On 26th March, New Zealand entered the fourth stage of the lockdown, which affected international students residing on on-campus accommodation as well as living privately. Classes were shifted to the online medium. Moreover, the government decided to take up responsibility for the betterment of students and began providing the necessary support services. The government has ensured to provide requisite services such as food, medicine, health care supplies to those who are in need.

Part-Time Job Opportunities
Those who are part-time workers in the health care sector, were permitted to put in the extra hours and could work for more than 20 hours per week. It is a widespread speculation that this trend will continue even after the lockdown has ended. However, whether or not that is the case can only be understood when there occurs an intimation from the government. Furthermore, even those students who are working in supermarkets can put in the extra hours at work, without having a detrimental effect on their visa status.

Visa
It is informed by the government that those students who hold a student visa or a Post Study Work visa can extend their visas till the 25th of September provided that their visas were on the verge of expiring, All the students need to do is bring it to the attention of the government and put in an email and the visa will be automatically extended. Secondly, those students who have received an AIP and need to pay their tuition fees, have the option of either extending their intake or deferring the course. Students will have to wait and see how the situation pans out, to see how and when the lockdown is lifted. Since there are multiple intakes in universities in New Zealand such as those in February and July which are the most popular or even the October, November intakes, students have at their disposal ample of options to study in New Zealand.

Current Scenario
Since we are in constant touch with the university, we are glad to inform you that universities in New Zealand are processing applications as well as issuing offer letters. However, in most likelihood classes will be conducted online, and once the travel ban is lifted students can expect to complete the remainder of their courses in New Zealand. It is crucial that as prospective students you remain in the loop. Be assured that your application will be processed and that the July intake is on. As mentioned earlier, classes are expected to be conducted online. Universities are making several provisions for the convenience of international students. One of these include online tests for English Language proficiency tests. However, whether or not this will be accepted by the immigration authorities is something we need further light on. Students who are looking to make an application to study in New Zealand, but face the risk of their IELTS expiring before they make an application for the July intake can make an application irrespective because such applications will continue to be considered. However, this does not apply to those students who extend beyond 12 months.

Immigration
Immigration offices in New Zealand are closed, however pending visa requests which also includes Post Study Work Visas for which payment is issued, will be worked upon a priority basis soon.

Future Predictions
23rd April onwards, New Zealand is on alert level 3, which means that 50% of individuals can resume work, provided social distancing norms are adhered to. Construction, manufacturing, forestry, online food delivery will see some relaxation but with the presence of certain restrictions. However, services such as gyms, salons, boating are restricted.
The summary that can be drawn from this is that students can either consider taking online classes or defer their application. It is best that students wait and watch to see how the situation pans out.

What study in Australia looks like amid COVID-19

Australia is an affordable study destination, which provides quality education, tolerant society and impeccable living conditions. The higher education system in Australia is top-notch and ranks amongst the world’s best. Education in Australia is economical by providing compact and intensive courses, which includes in itself developments in science and technology. Therefore, attaining a degree from Australia is not only practical but also receptive to the changing environment. Presently over 60000 Indian students are studying in Australia. There are 41 universities which have over 3000-5000 students, 39 of the institutions are run by the government.
Recognised by the Australian Government the Australia Qualification Framework (AQF) is an integrated nationwide system of qualifications. In this, the student can transfer from one level of study to the other, whilst receiving credit for previous study.
Australia is popular study destination that has through the years, attracted a magnanimous number of international students. Several statistics show that Australia is safer when compared to other countries from the impact of COVID-19. This can be further attributed to the fact that the number of cases reported in Australia are heading towards a downward spiral. The Australian government has brought in the necessary measures required to curtail the impact of COVID-19 and the same has been aimed at international students as well.

Partnership between the government and universities
Universities in Australia, along with the government has announced hardships funds worth at least one hundred and ten million dollars for everyone, in order to mitigate the COVID-19 risk. Apart from this, fee reliefs, loans and food banks are also provided to the people.

Support offered by universities
Universities are offering online programs that students can attend from their homes in Australia. Students are encouraged to begin going through the course and all forms of technical aid in terms of laptop, internet adaptors are provided to students, so that they can attend their lectures smoothly. Additional services, such as interaction with faculty, panels, discussions, assignments are also allocated to the students, so that they can complete their courses without facing any road blocks. Interactive scholarships are also offered to the students by certain universities.

Accommodation
Universities that have the facility of an on-campus accommodation, have also provided financial assistance to the students. Some universities in Australia have taken the decision to waive off accommodation fees for up to 4-8 weeks.

Students looking to study in Australia this year
The best solution is to wait and watch, and see how things pan out. It would be detrimental to stop making applications. By continuing to make applications, you ensure yourself to be hassle free once the situation is under control. You won’t be in a rush in the end, and will be well prepared compared to your counterparts. You ensure yourself the possibility of receiving your offer letter on time. By doing so, you are saving yourself from risks at the eleventh hour and even after you make an application, you can decide whether you want to study in Australia for the current intake. It is important to remember that this is all subject to the norms and regulations brought in for international students by the Australian government.

Students who have received a confirmation
Those students who have received their ECOE after the payment of the stipulated fees, are recommended to wait and watch to see how the situation pans out. The High Commission of Australia is expected to provide an update regarding the situation. It would be wise to rein in the horses and not defer applications for the time being. Be patient to see how things pan out, there is definitely going to be light at the end of this tunnel. Thus, its best to initiate an action after the High Commission’s decision.

Online Classes
Certain universities in Australia are expected to start their courses online, so that students can attend classes from their homes. It could be the case that the students may not receive the university intake of their choice. But once the situation is settled, you can continue your education in Australia. The major advantage you receive from doing so is that you will save on a certain proportion of the living costs.

Influence of COVID-19 on university admissions in Canada

Canada is a host to over 180000 international students in a year. Through the years the number of international students deciding to study in Canada is increasing. Students have various choices of over 96 Universities and 175 community colleges offering a broad range of courses. The country is an international leader in computers, Java, networking and wireless communication. It has also made a prominent place in a varied number of areas such as aerospace, engineering, biotechnology, telecommunications, transportation, environmental studies and much more. Few of the world’s most recognized companies such as BlackBerry, IMAX, Corel, Cineplex Cinema, BATA, McCain food and many more have originated from Canada. The country provides a peaceful, diverse and safe environment to pupils for learning as well as working.
These are unprecedented and tough times for all of us, however, it is important that we all remember that this situation is temporary and we all need to stay positive of its outcome. Don’t let your hope sink in and expect things to go back to normal in the near future. At such a time, it is natural to have a ton of doubts in your minds to the thousand questions that are bothering you as well.
This article, looks to answer some of the doubts you have regarding your study in Canada due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Summer Courses
Those courses in Canada that are starting in summer, that is the May’20 intake has two sets of students. One comprises of those who have received their visa approval and the other who are awaiting a response. It should be noted, that it is noteworthy that the Canadian government has awarded the highest priority to the above-mentioned issue. Edwise, is in constant touch with the university, which allows us to inform you of the current happenings of the situation in Canada. The IRCC has recently announced that those students who are planning to study in Canada for the May/June intake, can begin attending online courses from their home country. Those students, who have a study permit for the May/June intake but cannot travel due to the travel restrictions imposed can commence their classes from outside Canada and complete 50% of their course from their home country, without having a negative impact on their visa status.
International Students
International students should also note that even though they will have to attend online classes for the time being, they will still remain eligible for the Canadian Post Graduation Work Permit. The Post-Graduation Work Permit ensures that those students who have completed programs that are more than 8 months in duration can stay and work in Canada for up to 3 years. This also comes in handy when making an application for permanent residency.
Online Classes
Online classes are heavily advocated by universities and colleges in Canada, the major advantage students receive from attending these courses is that they can begin their classes on time, and that to from the comfort of their homes. Online classes will also have no effect on the Post Study Work right of students. Once things go back to normal, they can also attend the next semester in Canada itself and still be eligible for the Post Study Work Right.
Deferring Courses
Students also have at their disposal the option of deferring their courses to September. This option is best for those, who don’t wish to travel and are reluctant to undertake classes online. A majority of universities and colleges in Canada are offering this option.
Withdrawing Application
If in the extreme case you decide to withdraw your application and ask for a refund, it is important to note that you are refuting all the hard work you made into making that application. In most cases, people are of the opinion that considering the present situation, undertaking online classes is the best solution. It is a win-win situation because students save the living and travel expenses of studying in Canada, whilst at the same time retain their Post Study Work.
May Intake Students
Students who are looking to study in Canada for the May intake should contact the college to understand the start date. Those who will travel by air will have to undergo the necessary medical testing before and after boarding the plane. After which, students are also required to self-isolate themselves for a period of 14 days. However, students who don’t have a place to self-isolate will not be permitted to enter Canada.
September Intake Students
Students looking to study in Canada for the September intake are recommended to remain optimistic and remember that the situation is temporary and continue with their plans.
Points to Consider
Some universities and colleges in Canada are accepting applications without the IELTS scorecard and final year marksheet. Duolingo is a platform that is increasingly being used by universities to conduct English proficiency tests. Staff working at universities are also working from home and assessing applications and issuing offer letters. Payment delays are also accepted and thus students should consider all these points before deciding whether or not to study in Canada.

COVID-19 and its impact on education abroad

The world is now in the midst of grappling with the effects of COVID-19. Nearly every imaginable industry is dealing with its consequences. The overseas education industry is no different, all affected stakeholders such as students, universities, teachers and parents are baffled with what will happen next.
It’s safe to say that study abroad plans in 2020 will be affected, however one cannot predict its impact and there exists an air of uncertainty around the same.

Present Scenario
If we look at each country specifically, we can comprehensively understand the situation that persists:
UK: A majority of international students in the UK, decided to return to their home country amidst the impact of the coronavirus. A majority of universities in UK, were at threshold of completing their semester. Apart from this, substantial number of universities were on Easter break. A major trend among these universities was the fact that official classes were stopped and students were either asked to return to their home country or they could stay back in the UK, and complete their remainder of their course online.
USA: There are some international students who are still in the USA, due to the unavailability of flights and have decided to stay back to complete the rest of the semester online. The above-mentioned countries have permitted international students to stay back without having a negative effect on their visas, and this includes H1B visa holders as well.
Canada, Australia, New Zealand: Due to the current scenario, there has been an adverse impact on the part time jobs available, which invariably has detrimental effects on the income of the students. Therefore, certain study abroad destinations has allowed specific status holders who have either paid taxes, provident funds or have super annuity to drop these in order to access funds. Universities as well as the government is offering all possible assistance to international students.
What Next?
As a prospective international student, you are obviously wondering, what next? Engage in as much conversation as possible to gain maximum amount of information. You could continue making applications and preparing for necessary pre-requisite tests required as part of your application process. Whether part time jobs will be permitted or accessible are questions that only time can answer. The availability of part-time jobs will largely be dependent on the impact the economy has faced.
Statistics
In an internal survey conducted, we found that 70% of the students were unsure and had decided to wait and watch as to how the situation pans out. 20% of the students mentioned that they were leaning towards the January or February intake of next year, whilst 10% said that they will give the year a skip.
Online Classes
Predominantly classes are likely to commence online, with the major assumption being that January classes will occur offline. However, as an international student you need to decide for yourself by weighing the benefits and analysing the costs. In most likelihood, online classes will be cheaper than the traditional medium. Online classes will not only enable you to save time but a large number of students seem to prefer the same. Even earlier, a significant number of universities in USA conducted online classes that were pre-recorded. In the future, online courses are going to become extremely significant, with assumptions of 50% online classes being accepted during the visa application process in the USA and the same being taken into consideration for course credits. Universities are likely conduct seminars in different time zones enabling students in every part of the world to attend the same. Although, this is not the same as interacting in classes, it allows students to come together.
Future Predictions
UK: The September intake may get pushed to October, with the visa office likely to open on June 1st. Online English tests for admissions are likely to occur, however whether it will be taken into consideration for visa is uncertain. Original submission of documents may be waived and deadlines are likely to get extended.
USA: Whilst the visa offices are currently shut, international students are continuing to make applications to study in USA. Institutions are likely to conduct online classes that will be taken into consideration while allocating course credit points. However, not all programs have online avenues.
Canada: Students looking to study in Canada in September are optimistic, because it’s a largely held belief that the situation is likely to be under control till then. Majority of the May’20 classes will begin online and subjects that don’t have the available online avenues are allowing students to switch to subjects that offer online programs. Attendance to online classes is likely to be given consideration during visa application, and factors such as commitment to course, fees paid are determining factors.
Australia and New Zealand: July intake is a cause of concern. Whilst visa applications are accepted online, the response time is slow. What is most expected is the delay of the academic calendar. Deadlines are likely to be extended.
Ireland: Continues to accept visa online.
Advice
·       Be patient
·       Be optimistic
·       Research
·       Keep the process on by preparing for entrance tests
·       Interact with people to judge the scenario
·       Consider making submissions
·       Regard online classes
Universities abroad are providing significant assistance by providing quarantine facilities. The impact on tuition fees, jobs, scholarships, education loans can only be understood with time.
