GRE GMAT SAT : A Brief Introduction

https://edwiseinternational.com

March 2019

Language testing plays an important role in the teaching-learning process. It helps language teachers to place students at their appropriate levels, to diagnose the students' strengths and weaknesses, and to evaluate their performance during and at the end of the course.

The purpose of a language test is to determine a person's knowledge and ability in the language and to discriminate that person's ability from that of others. Such ability may be of different kinds such as, achievement, proficiency and aptitude.

GRE :-

Analytical Writing - There are two tasks in this section: Analyse an Issue and an Argument. The issue task requires analysing and developing opinion around it. In the argument task, the candidates have to analyse and present their position regarding it. Learn to give reasons for the opinions. Practice using better vocabulary. Determine the direction of the argument i.e., for or against. Filter all the points for or against the issue based on a reason. Although spelling or grammatical error will not affect the score, severe and persistent errors will detract from the overall effectiveness of the writing and lower your score.

Verbal Reasoning - This section measures the ability to analyse, understand, plan, add value and draw conclusions to the data. To analyse and evaluate you must distinguish between concepts, words, the relationships between them and different parts of sentences. Vocabulary plays a vital role. Along with learning new words, learn and practice the usage of the words as well. Practice as many reading comprehensions as possible. Learn all the rules of grammar and tenses to understand the basic usages. Spelling and grammatical errors may prove to be fatal.

GMAT :-

Verbal - As this is an Integrated Reasoning Section, it is always advisable to determine what exactly is being asked before selecting the best choice, so it is important to use your time correctly. Do not spend too much time on one question if you are not sure of the answer, rather just eliminate the wrong choices and select best of the remaining choices. Do not skip any questions as they are based on the same prompt of the previous questions. Before you confirm your answer, re-check your answers as you may not navigate back to change your response. All questions are compulsory as there is a penalty for not completing the test. You may lose your score if you fail to follow these instructions.

Analytical Writing - The best approach to Analytical Writing is to read the instruction carefully. Always plan the answer before writing and take a moment, think and then attempt the question. Organise your thoughts and ideas and them develop them to respond the question, re-read your answer and if required improve it.

SAT :-

Reading - Read all the choices before you decide. Break down the unknown words into prefixes, suffixes, roots. Get acquainted with the introduction of the text. Try to predict the passage while you read the opening sentence. For the paired reading passage, read the passage one by one and then answer the following questions. For the graph analysis section, evaluate the graph and the axes and incorporate the data from the given passage.

Writing And Language - This is based on essay-editing skills and is generally easy to finish. Lookout for the common errors like verb, tense, punctuation, words etc. Every word is important so jumping into some conclusion without reading the text will not work. Determine the concept of the text, narrow down the issue by reviewing the answer choices.

Essay - Start the essay with a prominent thesis and organise it throughout. No personal opinion is required for your response to the analysis made. Use clear transitions, precise vocabulary and specific descriptions. Take time to read, plan and take notes of the given source. Watch out for the errors like spelling, sentence formations and grammar. Pace yourself so that you can make a strong conclusion to your response.

Foundation Course:

A Foundation Course is very similar to that of an Associate Program. While Associate Degrees are very well known in the USA, in UK they are referred to as Foundation Programs. The one thing unique about foundation courses are that they can be studied either full time or part time. Foundation courses are mainly designed for international students who need the pre-requisite knowledge to take up their major field of studies.

Diploma Course:

Diploma courses generally last for 1-2 years duration. They provide basic theoretical knowledge about the subject in focus. After studying diploma, a student can either choose to study a degree course or look for employment. By studying a diploma course, students also receive practical training making them industry ready. A degree however holds more importance and value compared to a diploma course.

Undergraduate courses differ from country to country in various different aspects:

Students must know that all the undergraduate applications made in the UK are supposed to be made through UCAS, an institution that manages the complete application process of British universities. Undergraduate degrees in UK are 3-4 years long. Students wanting to pursue an undergraduate degree from the UK must have completed 18 years of age else they must have a guardian living in the UK. Courses like Engineering and Law and Management require 80-85% while Humanities, Arts, Social Science, and Computer Science require 70-80%. Students who have scored below 60% can opt for Foundation and Diploma courses. UK offers undergraduate degrees in the field of Business, Law, Computer Science, Engineering, Social Sciences, Music and Arts, etc.

2. Undergraduate Degree in USA:

USA is a country that enables its students to study various other subjects along with their major field of study. To study an undergraduate degree in the US, international students must complete 10+2 years of education. The undergraduate programs in the USA are of 2 years and 4 years. Students appearing for an associate degree in the US must take the IELTS/TOEFL/PTE and those appearing for a bachelor’s degree must appear for SAT or ACT and TOEFL/IELTS/PT. The subjects offered by the US universities for undergraduate studies include Business Administration, Political Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Economics, Law, etc.

3. Undergraduate Degree in Canada:

Canadian institutes usually offer four year undergraduate programs. To pursue an undergraduate qualification from Canada, international students must hold minimum 12 years of education with a minimum of 70% in prominent examinations. Students must take the required proficiency tests like TOEFL/PTE and SAT/ACT in order to be eligible to study the undergraduate course in Canada. Popular undergraduate programs offered are Information Technology, Engineering, Business Management, Pharmacy, Medicine and Healthcare, etc.

4. Undergraduate Degree in Australia:

Undergraduate programs in the Australian universities last for a period of 3 and 5 years. Australia too requires its international students to complete 12 years of education. The two most common forms of undergraduate degrees are the bachelor's and honour's degree. The Australian universities don’t offer foundation programs to its students. Their undergraduate courses include Business Administration and Law, Engineering, Humanities, Mathematics and Computing, Information and Technology, Visual and Performing Arts, Social Studies, etc.
Apart from the above mentioned countries, there are other countries too like New Zealand, Singapore, Germany, France, Italy, Malaysia, etc. which offer undergraduate degrees for similar courses. Singapore- An Attractive Study Destination for Students

March 2019
Though Singapore is very small in size, the country has a booming and extremely stable economy. Singapore is counted among the top educational destinations in the world. Singapore offers a progressive education system with state-of-the-art facilities. The standard of education is excellent across all levels, starting right from the primary level. Apart from the public schools, Singapore also has 30+ international schools that follow the foreign education system for children of expatriates. The 5 autonomous universities of Singapore are ranked well globally and all other private institutes of higher education (PEIs) are regulated by the Council for Private Education (CPE.)

Singapore gets a lot of foreign investment because it has a skilled workforce, corruption-free society, low tax rates and well-developed infrastructure. The unemployment rate of the country is very low. Students choose Singapore as their study abroad destination because it has endless career opportunities. Apart from the international business investments, many reputed international universities have invested in Singapore.
Study in Singapore

Following are the reason for Singapore being an attractive study destination:-

No Language Barrier:

Singapore has a total of four national languages and English is one among them. Hence, language is not a problem here. It is quite easy and comfortable to get around in Singapore. International students can quickly adjust here because 75% of the country's population can speak English. Most importantly, the official language of education in Singapore is English. Therefore, international students don't feel alien here.

Moderate Climate:

Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons. The temperature does not vary much and ranges from 22 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees. This moderate climate is conducive to living. It is a green city with the highest area under a cover of trees in spite of its urbanization. The moderate climate throughout the year makes it an attractive destination for students across the world.

Visa and Immigration:

International students wishing to study in Singapore will need to obtain a student visa. When you get your letter of approval, you will also be issued a visa by your institution. Within two weeks of your acceptance, you will need to apply to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for a Student Pass. This also needs to be no earlier than two months and no later than one month before the start to your course. This process will be done through the Student̢۪s Pass Online Application and Registration System (SOLAR). You will be given registration details by your institution, which you will use to fill in and submit the required forms. You will then need to complete the process once you have arrived in the country. To do this, you will need to make an appointment with the ICA and take with you the disembarkation/embarkation card that you were granted on entry to Singapore.

Standard of Living:

One of the areas where Singapore scores high is the standard of living. This is one of the reasons why expats from all over the world move to Singapore. In fact, Singapore is regarded as the easiest city to adjust in Asia, specifically for international students. Being home to a large number of foreigners, the well-known financial centre of Asia also offers a diverse background to international students.

Mixed Culture:

Pre-plan your Expenses to Study Abroad

March 2019
Realising the importance of acquiring high and rich qualifications, an increasing number of candidates now wish to earn an overseas degree. While the cost of an education may seem overwhelming to some, one can still afford to study abroad without breaking the bank. It is also important to note that the cost of living, currency and tuition vary depending on the location and university of choice. The following aspects should be kept in mind when planning your expenses for an overseas education.
Studying Abroad Programs

Scholarships:

Scholarships and other forms of financial aid are means of offsetting costs when studying abroad. While some scholarships provide partial assistance, there are others that cover tuition and living expenses. Applying early increases your chances of securing a scholarship. Take the time to scour for scholarships.

Exchange rates:

When looking to study overseas, the best way to get the most out of your home country's currency is to keep yourself updated with the latest rates. This will help you keep track of the amount you will be spending when overseas. Furthermore, Edwise has strong alliance with reputed foreign exchange dealers and ensures that students are offered best rates, along with the chance at an affordable education.

Credit cards:

Cashless forms of payment such as credit cards are widely accepted across countries and are useful for those initial expenses. When choosing a credit card, opt for one that has added benefits and allows for transactions at no hidden or additional costs. Often a credit card can be blocked if there are unusual purchase patterns, therefore it is important that you notify the credit card company of your travel plans before you set off for your education overseas.

Open a local bank account:

Opening a local bank account is a practical option for candidates who opt to study overseas. The reason being, money can be needed at any point of time for reasons small or big. Hence it is always wise to be prepared. A local account safeguards your finances, and allows for easy access to funds and payments without having to worry about exorbitant transaction and withdrawal fees. When choosing a bank, opt for one that fits in with your preferences.

Draw a Budget wisely:

Financial planning becomes very important once you start staying away from your home and that too in a foreign land. Managing expenses and saving money for unforeseen events in the future is of utmost importance. While everyone enjoys the thrill of experiencing life in a new country, it is important that you refrain from unnecessary buys. Creating weekly budgets, and listing items that you require on a monthly basis helps you prioritize your budget and spend wisely. It ensures a smooth and tension free stay.

Paying back your loan:

Student loans can differ in terms of interest rates and terms, and so it is important that you understand how your loan repayment plan works. There are various types of educational loans that are available to candidates at reasonable rates. Set up monthly payment plans to avoid late recurring charges. We at Edwise provide proper and detailed guidance on the various types of educational loans available, and will additionally provide you with an array of nationalized banks that offer loans to students at affordable rates.
