How to make it through exam season.

The exam is around the corner and many students get too stressed up. Exams bring mixed feelings and anxiety but you are not the only one who feels this. Many people go through a tough time. Some students deal with tons of coffee, all-nighters, lack of social life. Looking at the brighter side, after exams there's always a holiday and soon you will get to enjoy those beautiful times. Here are some guidelines on how to study during exam time, how to keep your mind calm and to be motivated.

·     Manage wisely: This is the most important tip. One needs to plan a whole day's schedule until exams end. Write down on the sticky notes, on a calendar, planner. It will be good to write down every minute detail. Also make notes of your exam date, time and location and pin them on the wall. This is better than stressing over that you have forgotten your timetable because your phone had a glitch. Make notes of important notes that your professor tells you. These notes will help you work easily and accordingly. Divide the subjects or topics.

·     Payback yourself: After completing one topic or a subject reward yourself by taking a short break or treating yourself with little chocolate. This will help you in motivating yourself to study more. You can do more things to spice it up. Don't forget to pat yourself at the back after completing each task

·     Study in Group: Studying in a group with all your friend can ease the exam pressure and make the study fun. Even if you are a lone wolf who likes to study alone still reach out to your friend during this intense period. It will motivate you as well as your friends. Discussing topics or subjects with each other can also make you learn faster. There might be some difficulties in understanding some topics, studying in a group can also clear many doubts. Sometimes studying in a group can be a distraction as well but it all depends entirely on your friend group.

·     Efficient sleep: worry about the exam is ok but not sleeping and working intensely is not ok. We all need sufficient sleep to make our bodies work healthily and properly. One can pull up nighters but the next day you will feel drained and in this way, you will miss out on your study. Your body needs to refuel from the exhaustion. It is better to wake up early than not to sleep at all.

·     Never worry about what others doing: Sometimes someone might behave completed more portion than you at that time you get more panicked. All you need to focus on yourself and your studies. They might have different methods for studying and it be may be helpful for them but it is not necessary it will be useful for you. So just stick to your gun.

·     Avoid Junks: During exams, we get so indulge in our curriculum we forget to eat our meals and all we crave is some junk food. Eating junk will make you sluggish and unmotivated which will end up not completing your studies on time. Rather than eating junk food stick to some whole grain and fresh vegetables which is healthy.

·      Relax by exercising: first of all, in between your paybacks, you need to do little meditation to relax your mind before jumping to another subject or topic. You can add more exercise to the schedule, it is the best revision tool. It gives you energy and alert. Most importantly it helps you release your stress.

International students and the obstacles they encounter while studying overseas

Pursuing studies at a foreign college or university is a dream of many students. Getting an opportunity to study abroad is very exciting. However, one experiences a number of challenges in a foreign country. The most common obstacles one encounters are as follows:

1. Culture Shock

The most common challenge faced by students studying overseas is culture shock i.e. cultural differences in the new country that one has to adjust to that are completely different from one's own culture back home.

Every student is expected to adjust to life in the host country.

The Indian culture and value system varies tremendously from the ones that students might encounter in the UK, USA, New Zealand, Australia or any other European country.

The environment, people and culture overseas are completely different from one's home country.

A student will meet people from different backgrounds, speaking different languages, eating food unheard of etc.

The way things are done in a foreign country differ from the way things are done in one's home country. However, instead of criticizing the manner in which these things are done, one should try hard to adjust to the same.

Adjusting one's self to a new culture is not easy, and one easily experiences culture shock. However, to overcome this, one should just be one's self, make new friends and communicate.

This in turn benefits one in the long run, providing one with a well-rounded, liberal and broad-minded personality.

2. Communication/ Language Barrier

Upon arriving in a new country, international students face several challenges, the most important being the language barrier.

In several countries viz. Germany or France, English is not the local language and thus, language can prove to be a communication barrier.

The most obvious of all the challenges faced by international students, to overcome the language barrier, students may struggle to learn the new language in the host country, or may not be able to understand the local accent.

Adjusting to the new lifestyle and routine may seem challenging for many.

One may find it difficult to communicate with their peers and fellow students. Thus in turn may cause one to feel unwanted or like an outsider in the foreign land.

However, to overcome this challenge, one should freely open up to other people. Go out, talk to people and try to understand them.

3. Away from family and friends i.e. the feeling of homesickness

Another common challenge faced by students studying abroad is the feeling of homesickness i.e. the feeling one experiences when one is away from friends and family.

Many a times, a student has to stay all alone in the foreign country as he/she might not have relatives or friends here.

One might experience homesickness and loneliness for a few months as you are far away from your beloved one's.

It is a very natural feeling and to overcome the same, one should regularly talk to family and friends back home.

Not just this, one should also make friends in the host country, go out, talk to people etc.

4. Day- to- Day Finances

Studying overseas is an expensive affair and students are likely to face financial problems at some point of time. One should learn to manage their daily expenses.

Apart from the costs of studying abroad, students have to incur accommodation costs, traveling costs, costs of study material, day- to- day living expenses, tuition fees etc.

The student will also need to purchase a laptop or personal computer for the purpose of study. In case of any unforseen circumstance, the student may find it hard to arrange for required funds to take care of expenses.

In bigger cities, costs are more expensive and is dependent on one's lifestyle, spending habits and choice of accommodation.

Avoid wasteful expenditure. Instead, manage money. Bagging a scholarship will help reduce one's expenses.

Importance of Class Participation

Study abroad means starting a whole new life as an international student. Students try to adapt to new surroundings, new teaching and new studying methods, new classmates, new environment, new people can become ominous until students don't get to socialize with other people. Most of the time people get socialize in classrooms or on campus, so make good use of it.

Active classroom participation is an important way of adapting to the new lifestyle. Communicating in class, students learn to express their points of view and ideas to the other students in a way that they can understand. When a student asks questions, they learn to obtain information to intensify their knowledge. Some people are introverts by nature while some lack confidence to speak to people that easily, so speaking in class can be a struggle for many students. This struggle might be explicit in the classroom in many ways like not answering questions, not volunteering to any activity, not asking help from anyone and not even talking to in class at all. There are many ways to support active participation in the class, here are some.

·     Self-Confidence:

Many students get nervous to speak in front of a crowd of people. To cover the fear, students need to push themselves and learn to speak in class.

While participating actively in the class, will help students to build their confidence make them comfortable to speak in front of the major crowd. Having the quality to speak in front of people is important in the real world.

Confidence is an important accessory in human life and one should wear it.

·     Increase attention

Students need to interact with the professor and other classmates because listening to one long lecture can make a person lose interest. While interacting with the professor and the classmate will help the environment of the class be active. Asking questions, clearing doubts, debating on topics will not make the class environment unexcited and help students focus on the lectures, therefore it will help them to increase their attention.

·     Engagement

While interacting and clearing doubts with the students helps them engaging. Asking questions to the students or raising questions by the students will let other students think about the possible answers, doing dots and come up with tons of solutions. This leads to the analytical skill and the development of thinking in students. Thus class participation will help all the students engaging and help them know each other better.

·     Put Forth Opinions

While participating in class helps students to keep up with the topics that are being discussed. When students start paying attention in the class naturally they start thinking and analyzing the subjects and they start putting their thoughts into it. When the student's thoughts are different from the professor or any classmates, the student feels that their thoughts need to be expressed at that time they can openly put forth their opinions. In this competitive world, having our own opinion is necessary to survive. Class participation helps students to fearlessly express opinions.

·     Ideas.

From raising the question to expressing opinions with other classmates generate various ideas. These talks help students to understand how different individual thinks. It also helps them in exchanging interesting knowledge, facts and information that will help them in the future.

Good Study Habits College Students Should Adopt During Their Studies Overseas

The decision to study overseas is a major one. Everyone wishes to excel in whatever one undertakes and thereby be successful in the future. While studying abroad, students should adopt the following habits in order to earn good grades and emerge victorious.

Take down notes and review the same

• Learning is a life long process and is limited not just to textbooks. Reading newspapers, novels, magazines or even articles on the internet enables one to understand things taking place all over the world as well as around us. This in turn can contribute to one’s knowledge.

• One should get into the habit of taking notes, be it during a lecture or even while reading something assigned to you.

• This helps students to understand the lesson better. Taking notes aids in absorbing key terms and ideas more efficiently.

• One should also review the notes after class in order to retain the information. Reviewing while the material is still fresh in your mind, enables one to learn the material taught that day, more effectively.

• In case one misses a lecture, one should ask one’s classmates for a refresher.

• One should get into the habit of rewriting lecture notes. This is one of the most clever methods of study one should practice. Rewriting will aid one in remembering the context better. On the other hand, restructuring the notes compels one to understand the lesson.

Organize the class materials

• One should avoid keeping a bulky bookbinder or even a backpack of all loose sheets.

• Instead, the student should very neatly organize his/her study materials- books, stationery, notes and handouts and put the same into different folders.

• This enables one to very easily find what one requires for each exam as well as keep one’s homework together which in turn, helps to avoid massive clutter. One should color-code as this helps to differ between the topics and keep different topics separately.

• Take some time out and make sure the folders are in order. Also, download the readings and slides for each lecture in advance. This helps save time.

Avoid any form of distraction during studies

• One can gain access to large amounts of information, thanks to Technology. However, this useful tool can in turn, create distractions and prevent one from focusing on one’s research.

• After acquiring the necessary information to write, one should keep one’s phone on silent and switch off the wireless connection.

• Social media platforms are used today by almost everyone. Communicating on the same or talking over the phone could sap away one’s time for a good 20–30 minutes.

• On the other hand, upon receiving a notification, one is bound to immediately open it. One may also be required to reply to the same. This could also result in time loss.

• One can get distracted very easily. In such scenarios, avoid using your phone. Keep it out of sight while studying.

• Prioritize your education. Your friends can wait.

• Distractions can lead to ineffective studying as one losses the train of thought and is unable to focus.

• Before you sit down to study, find a corner with little/ no background noise. This will prevent you from getting disturbed or distracted.

Build an effective study environment around yourself

• The next step after organizing your notes and required study material is to create a place of study, free from distractions be it your roommates or the television, a place where one can get motivated and concentrate better on one’s studies.

• This place could be on campus, in a cafe, at home or at the beach.

• At times, study sessions with classmates may benefit you.

• Prepare a timetable and spend extra time on independent study per subject even if you just have 12/15 ‘contact hours’ on campus.

• Try changing your study routine. If you rely only on textbook revision, consider switching this routine to creating visual resources viz. flash cards or mind apps.
