How to Score High on the IELTS Academic Reading Test

IELTS i.e. International English Language Testing System is a standardized English proficiency test that assesses English Language skills in the areas of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP- Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL EXAMINATIONS.
The IELTS has two types of modules - Academic and General Training. Academic Module is required to be given by students who wish to study at an undergraduate or postgraduate level. While, General Training Module is generally a prerequisite for candidates who wish to pursue vocational studies or plan to immigrate.

There are different types of questions in the Reading test, and these test a range of reading skills that you will need for study purposes. You will be expected to find detailed or factual information, identify views, arguments and claims in addition to identifying the overall idea of the passage

Look at the questions before you start reading the text

Go through your questions before you begin reading, so you know what to be on the lookout for. When reading, ensure that you remember where certain information in the passage lies, this will help save time.

Solve more reading tests

This is the best way to prepare for the exam and will help you with the type of questions that you face a problem with. Practice will help you better prepare for each type of question. Solving practice tests will help you divide your time, so you won’t have to worry about working against time.

IELTS Test

Read the instructions carefully

Before you begin a particular task, be sure to read the instructions carefully. Most of the reading tasks that appear on the test will be similar to what you have been practicing. Make sure you don’t go over the word limit as particular questions will require you to answer the question in just one word or two.

Scanning

This is a great way to understand the main ideas of a text, and find key words easily. By scanning, you will be looking out for information that you will need to read in more detail. You should also be on the lookout for footnotes, key words and numbers in figures.

Speed Reading

The more you read, the quicker you will get at reading. It is a good idea to read texts and articles that are like the IELTS texts in terms of length and complexity. Speed reading is not just about fast reading, but on how much information you can remember when you have finished reading.

How to Ace the Listening Section on the TOEFL

The test of English as a Foreign Language is used to measure English language proficiency. If you are applying to a College or University where English is the language of instruction, your TOEFL scores will help determine whether your English skills are suitable for the program you wish to study. The TOEFL is administered in more than 180 countries, making it the most accessible test in the world.

The Listening section will test you on your ability to understand spoken English in Colleges and Universities. On the Listening section, you will have either a conversation on college campus or a lecture in a college classroom. Each conversation or lecture is between three to six minutes long. There are 6 or 9 prompts in the Listening section with 5-6 questions after each prompt. The Listening section has an experimental section, so if you are presented with 9 prompts only 6 of them will be graded, ensure that you do your best on all 9 because you will not know which of them will be graded.

On the TOEFL, you will only hear the passage; you won't be able to read a transcript, so be attentive while listening to the audio. Here's how you can listen strategically:
  • Listen effectively and take notes, it is important that you understand the overall idea of the conversation
  • Do not write down everything that you hear, you don't want to lose track of the conversation because you're concerned with the specifics of the lecture
  • In addition to listening to the content, focus on the structure of the conversation
  • Notice the way each speaker talks. Voice modulation plays a very vital role in listening. You will be able to make out what the speaker is saying, by focusing on his pitch. Once you figure this out, you will be able to have a better understanding of the lecture
  • Pay attention to signal words and transitions. Transition words, like 'next' or 'finally,' can help you figure out where you are in the passage.
  • Listening to English news can also help you improve your listening skills on the TOEFL. This will help increase your listening capability too
  • Look online for academic lectures. This will prove useful on the TOEFL. The lectures presented on the TOEFL exam are lectures that would typically be heard by freshmen or sophomore students at a University, familiarise yourself with the structure and language

How To Crack The Writing Section On The TOEFL

It is important to note that your first writing task consists of both a Reading and Listening part, so ensure that you keep your headset on at all times. Since the TOEFL ibt is a computer based test, your essay must be typed, so polish up on your typing skills well before you give the exam.

For Writing task 1, you will first have three minutes to read a passage. Use this time to skim through the passage, you do not have to take down notes, as the passage will reappear onto the screen at a later time. After the passage, you will listen to a lecture on the same topic, start taking down notes once the lecture begins, as the lecture will play just once. You will have 20 minutes to write an essay. Be sure that you summarize the points in the listening passage and explain how they relate to or cast doubt on specific points in the reading passage.

For task 2, you will have 30 minutes to write a response to a prompt. You will be asked to provide your personal views on the subject along with relevant examples.

Ensure that you answer what the question asks

One of the first things graders will look at when reading your essay is if you have answered the question in the prompt. Essays that don't address the issue will lose out on points. It is important that you know what each tasks needs you to do. The first task should contain only of facts from the Reading and Listening material. Be sure not include any personal opinions for this task, this essay should be written entirely in the third person. The second task will require you to give your opinion on an issue.

Make sure that your essay is long enough

When writing, you must ensure that your essay should be within the TOEFL's length guidelines. For the integrated task, you essay should be 150 to 200 words. An effective response for Task 2 independent task is typically about 300 words long. It is important that you express your ideas clearly in Task 2.

Student Testimonials

“The Edwise mock test for the PTE was amazing and really helped me understand the format of the test and the coaching helped me to thoroughly prepare for the test.”
Saher - PTE Coaching

“I am writing this testimonial to Edwise International and especially to my tutor for PTE. I was tensed before giving my PTE exam because I got my passport late and I had to clear the exam in a single attempt. I explained the situation to her. She helped me a lot. Those two sessions were really very very crucial for me as I scored 77/90 in PTE with 90/90 in speaking. This score has also helped me in getting a part time job in Australia as well. My tutor was very calm, understanding, I am really thankful to Edwise and for the overall experience with a Coaching Dept.”
Siddhesh Lad - PTE Coaching

Do's & Dont's On Your First Day of College

Does the thought of heading out to college make you homesick? We have few tips that will turn your first day into a cakewalk

Starting afresh in almost any aspect can be quite daunting and almost always involves leaving behind your school friends, who you have known for years and making new ones in college, it is the start of a whole new year in higher education. While the intellectually gifted and socially extroverted will have no qualms about fitting in, the rest of us might just be ruing one of the biggest transitions of our lives. And so, to make it easier for you, we have a few do’s and don’ts, that might just help you get through your first day at college with fewer pitfalls.

DO

Wear your best outfit. You don’t have to be dressed to the nines, but it always helps to look well turned out. Make sure to look neat and prim, but avoid going overboard with small aspects of your overall look like your perfume or your make up. You want to appear friendly, without looking like you’re trying too hard.

DON’T

Over prepare. Even if it’s just stationary or books make sure that you’re not carrying too many things in your backpack. In all likelihood, you won’t have much to do on your first day. So focus on getting your schedule right and making new friends.

DO

Polish up your social skills. Most people are apprehensive about approaching people on the first day of class. And so, here’s a neat trick – approach the ones that are alone. It’s easier to talk to someone when they’re alone rather than talking to a whole group of people, and it will help them open up better.

DON’T

Be late. Being early to your first class will allow you to have some breathing space, and will give you time to mentally prepare you for your first day of coursework. You don’t want to be late to class, only to be told off for being late.

DO

Carry snacks. Most people don’t take kindly to the humble food arrangements made by the college canteen and so, carrying a few snacks with you always help. Not to mention, it is a sure shot way of attracting a few potential friends.

DON’T

Hesitate to explore your surroundings. Since you won’t have a lot of studying to do, you will have plenty of time to explore your surroundings. Make sure to check out all your respective classrooms, your libraries and extracurricular rooms.
