Quick Help To Write An SOP

December 2018
SOP stands for Statement of Purpose. If you are planning to study abroad, it is compulsory for you to write a statement of purpose. This essay is majorly written to the admission committee stating why you wish to study a particular program and that too from their university only. Through an SOP you get a chance to convince the admission committee to grant you admission. This essay is required by the committee to understand you as a person and why you wish to study with them. It is needed to be written as conducting an interview is not possible due to distance barriers.
An SOP has the power to make or break your admission process. Writing an SOP though, is not a difficult task. To make writing an SOP easy, we bring to you the basic guidelines that will help you draft an impeccable SOP.
Study in Abroad

Major points to be covered in an SOP:

  • A little about yourself, educational background, your work experience and what you learnt, extra-curricular activities, etc.

  • Which program are you applying for and why

  • Name of the country and university you wish to study in and why.

  • how well will you exploit the opportunity if granted admission?

Points to be remembered while writing an SOP:

You are the hero: Remember that this is the only chance for the admission officer to know who you really are as person. This essay is all about you. You are the protagonist. Therefore narrate your story in the best way possible. Make sure you succeed in creating a good impression about yourself. This does not mean that you boast about being a fabulous or an extraordinary person. State who you really are (e.g. genuine, hardworking, intelligent, driven, focused, etc.).

Be honest: This is of utmost importance. State facts. Do not fake things just to create a good impression. It is okay if you haven’t done anything great. Simplicity can also work greatly in your favor.

Add a personal touch: Allow your SOP to talk directly to the admission officer. You can describe few events of your life that connect to your dreams or the field you have chosen to apply for. If it involves talking about some failure of yours, go ahead and talk about it. Adding a personal touch to your SOP will help the admission officer understand you closely.

Demonstrate Passion and Determination: Your SOP must demonstrate a strong passion for the program you have decided to apply for. There should be no room for confusion and uncertainty. Your SOP must clearly show that you are absolutely confident about your future and are passionate about pursuing the same.

Highlight Your Strengths and Achievements: Talk about your achievements and qualities openly. Don’t shy away. Just be careful about the tone.

Parts/Components of an SOP:

Introduction

This is the first thing that the admission officer is going to read. So make sure you start off well. Your introduction should hook up the interest of the officer. It should be unique and create curiosity. Your introduction sets the tone of the essay.

Body:

This is the major part of your SOP and should give all the important details. Mention which school and college you went to, which all subjects did you study, projects undertaken (preferably final year project), extra-curriculars you were a part of and the achievements accomplished. You can also talk about the challenges and failures faced and how you overcame them. The body must speak strongly about the work experiences and the qualities developed through them.

Conclusion:

The main focus of your conclusion is to mention the program you wish to study and why. Give reasons as to how you developed interest for the same. Then state concrete reasons as to why you wish to pursue the chosen program from ‘A’ particular country and university. Make sure you state proper reasons as the officer is always very keen to know this. Also, state why you think you will be a perfect fit for the university and why the university should grant you admission. Then, also state what and how you will contribute towards the university.

Things to avoid mentioning in the SOP:

  • Avoid using quotes as the admission officer does not want to know someone else’s thoughts but your own.

  • Avoid using clichés like “Even the word impossible has I am possible in it” as they take away the uniqueness of the essay.

  • Do not write anything negative about your country. It does not put you in a good light. Also, do not write too much negative or controversial about any other thing or person.

  • Do not be generic. Be specific and don’t sound lame or lethargic.

  • Don’t not lose focus. Most of the time it so happens that the students stray away from the main purpose and mention things which are not even remotely connected to the subject.

  • Remember that an SOP should always be written in an essay format. Do not divide it by giving pointers.
Avoid plagiarism. Do not copy someone else’s SOP. This has serious consequences

Important tips to be kept in mind:

  • While writing your SOP, use active voice and not passive voice.

  • Ensure the SOP is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors.

  • Start writing your SOP a month prior to submitting. Make sure you proofread it and also have it checked by others.

  • Maintain a word limit. A general SOP should not exceed 1,000 words. The size of the font should be 12. Your SOP should not be of more than 2 pages.

Common Myths About Studying Abroad

December 2018
Deciding to study abroad is a huge step one takes in his/her life. Thus one's mind is bound to get occupied with the number of thoughts. Among these are the many misconceptions too that exist, commonly known as myths. It becomes very important to break these myths in order to be able to make a pragmatic and an informed decision for taking a correct step towards your future.
Studying Abroad Programs

Listed below are common myths revolving around study abroad that need to be broken:

It is expensive:-

This is a common myth among a lot of Indian students. The expenses on studying abroad can vary greatly depending on the type and duration of the course. Some may be considered ‘expensive’ of course, but of the many available courses, these will only constitute a few. It also depends on the country you are choosing and whether it is a University or a college or an Institution. If you are willing to do a bit of research on your own, you will find that there are a lot of options available to reduce the cost.

It is all about fun: -

Some students do consider studying abroad an excuse to get away from home to have unlimited fun. But it can also be a great way to become more self-reliant, get familiar with different cultures and languages, a way to improve your knowledge and acquire new perspectives. Obviously, entertainment is indispensable. So, to make your study abroad experience perfect, make sure to keep a healthy balance between fun and study.

Businesses and Employers do not value International Degrees:-

If we consider the current rate of globalisation, any overseas degree or International experience is going to prove to be beneficial. It is definitely not going to affect your employment opportunities. By studying abroad you are going to develop a lot of skills as well as acquire International Qualifications, which would give you a chance to prove that you can work in varied circumstances and with all types of people.

Study abroad would consume more time to graduate:-

If you are willing to complete the whole course that you have chosen, abroad, then the length of the time will differ depending on which course you are choosing. But as there is huge variety available for varied course lengths, you are free to choose how long you would like to stay abroad. Make sure that you do your research properly so that your stay abroad, does not add any additional time to your course/degree.

Studying abroad is not safe:-

After so many incidents from the past, it is obvious for the parents to hesitate sending their kids to any foreign country for higher studies. But, this does not help much if you have higher goals in terms of studies and career. Most of the reputed Universities have all the necessary safety processes in place to help International students to settle in and feel safe. Any good university will provide you with all the information you need, to make sure that your time abroad is safe and secure. Universities will also guide you in finding accommodation and advise you on the safest public transportations.

It is better to travel abroad than studying there:-

When you study abroad, you do get a good amount of time to travel and explore the country, but of course it is not the main focus. Rather, the main focus is studying also understanding and being a part of a new culture. Visiting a place for a holiday is a very much surface level activity and you can get far more out of a study abroad trip by taking the time to stay local and explore the community that surrounds you, rather than just simply going to a major tourist sight and taking photographs.

Top MBA myths students fall for every year

December 2018

As you gear up for an exciting admission tour this season, we bring to you some known and unknown facts! Looks like,MBA really is a one-way ticket to the land of money, happiness and career satisfaction. Some urban legends never die. But MBA myths are even harder to digest. A million coaching centres, lakhs of websites and thousands of colleges are trying to sell you the MBA dream. And then there is the world – your lovely folks, nosey friends, and then your family. This could be the most shady part of your MBA.
Study Abroad

But is MBA worth all the anxiety?

For that, you need better access to recruiters.MBA does not guarantee a new career. It just gives a better direction to your present career. Aspirants often think that after B-school, they’ll come up with innovative solutions and drive the organisation to Success. Firms worth thousands of crores are not sitting hawk-eyed, dying to tap an MBA graduate so that they can drive them out of red. They have several think-pools who can maximize profits. And an MBA grad is just a small fish among those big think-pools.

So if you are an IT professional or a website designer, an MBA will not secure a career in finance or marketing. This myth surfaced a few years ago and really took off when business schools started accepting both GRE and GMAT scores for the application process. It stemmed from the fact that only the average GMAT score was reported by the ranking institutions, whereas the average GRE score generally remained unpublished. The placement teams have power to decide on placement activities, maintaining relations and communication with companies, and nobody can question what they do.

Be careful.Looking at the questions broadly it may seem most schools are asking the same question, but when read in detail the expectation in the answers differ from school to school. For example, one school expects you to focus more on why you want an MBA, while other school would like to know why are you applying to that school specifically. Another example: one school would like you to focus on describing a success or failure while the other school will require you to focus on what you learnt from that success or failure.

Minor differences in the wording of questions completely change the scope of the answers.Business schools are interested in an overall evaluation of your skill set, be it via the GRE or GMAT; there is no difference in how they consider the test results of either format. Plus, if you have already invested time in studying for the GMAT, it is best to double-down on that same test rather than switching to another format and content type. Most likely, you will do better by going deeper on the same test. Writing essay for one school and re-using it in other school’s essays is perfectly fine. Not wise.

The process is so secretive that placement team members are not allowed to even talk about anything remotely related to placements with anyone.A little background on placement teams in MBA institutes. Like in every top college, placements don't come under the responsibilities of professors. They simply don’t care. The deans and all do care because they want good placement so as to keep the rankings high. So, the placements come under a placement professor and a placement team - a group of 10 students selected/ elected from current MBA students. The selection/ election criteria is different for different institutes. In some institutes one team takes care of each placement session for two years and in others different placement teams are selected/elected to take care of different placement sessions.

Pre Departure Aspects To Consider Before Flying Abroad

November 2018
You have come a long way in this admission process. It's finally the time to follow the given below pre departure guidelines and fly off to the foreign land to accomplish your dreams.

Study Abroad

Here are a few essentials to be carried out :

  • Detailed Study of The Necessaries :

After receiving the acceptance letter from the university regarding your admission, start doing in-depth research about the city, its life, cafes, restaurants, stores, etc. available in and around the university and the location of your housing. Try to find out how the local life is out there. Make sure you are aware of the basic laws, rules and regulations (of what is acceptable and unacceptable). Carrying out such a research will help you to be little comfortable in a new place and make things easier for you.

Culture Shock is something that is experienced by most of the students. One experiences emotional as well as physical discomfort due to new place, people, way of living, language, etc. Hence it is very important to understand the various cultural norms, language, eating habits and many such similar things of the country you are heading to.

  • Arrange Funds/Finances :

After receiving a confirmation letter from the university, make sure that you plan and arrange for various costs like the tuition fees, living cost, and miscellaneous costs. Arrange for the funds, keeping in mind the location of your university as it plays a major role in estimating your total living cost. Plan and maintain a budget which will enable you to smoothly manage your expenses, after you start living abroad.

  • Visa Application :

Once you have done your research and made sure of having sufficient finances for studying abroad, you must now apply for a visa by following the correct procedure as guided by your counselor. Make your visa application only after you receive admission confirmation letter from the university.

  • Confirm Flight :

Do not be surprised if you are not getting to book the flight ticket and plus the one of your choice. This time of the year is busiest as not only students but also other visitors and tourists fly abroad. In such a case ask your travel agent to book the ticket for you well in advance. Along with booking the ticket, also find the best, speedy and convenient ways to reach your university.

  • Confirm Accommodation :

It is mandatory to confirm your accommodation within the stipulated time/date failing which, you will be left with no place to stay in campus or won't have an option to make a choice between accommodations available. If you choose to stay off-campus, make sure you find out proper details related to your housing location.

  • Value Added Services :

Securing yourself with other important aspects such as the use of currency, insurance, international communication services, etc. is extremely important. We at Edwise International provide students with these services. Few of our major services include :
  • Services related to forex
  • Student's travel insurance, medical insurance, loss and accident insurance
  • Excellent deals on booking of air tickets
  • International telecom services

  • Heath Check Up :

Get a health check-up done before you fly abroad. The university requires you to be immune against diseases like mumps, measles, tetanus, meningitis, etc. Make sure to carry your health reports, i.e. the proof of immunization with you.

  • Shopping :

Once you have been granted a visa, your study abroad plan gets an official approval stamp. This is when you start shopping for the necessary items. Make a list of all the things you need to buy and pack. Follow the list and shop all that you will need on a foreign land. Buy clothes, foot wear, leather and other such similar things, as these are expensive abroad.

  • Packing :

After you get all the things in place, start putting them in your bag. Start packing at least a week before the date of taking off. Make a checklist to ensure you don’t leave anything behind.

  • Crucial Documents and papers :

  • Copy of I-20
  • Passport
  • Financial Documents (CA Certificates, Bank Statements)
  • Admission letter
  • Affidavit of sponsor
  • Tuition fees and Accommodation receipts
  • Medical Reports
  • Tickets
  • Address book (India and selected country)
  • Insurance documents
  • Contact details of final destination

  • Emergency Plan :

Always make sure to keep, the important contact details of people you can contact during an emergency, handy. Make sure you have exchanged contact details with your classmates, roommates, university, faculty, etc. Also make sure that you leave a list of contacts back at home (India) which will have details of where your family/parents can find and contact you. In order to keep your parents from worrying about your whereabouts, make sure you plan out the time and ways of contacting them. Once you land in foreign country, immediately inform your parents about the same. Additionally, keep the number of your bank with you to resolve problems like stolen or misplaced cards. Make sure you know the emergency numbers of the country (e.g. 911).

On the coming 1st of December, 2018, Edwise International is organizing a Pre Departure Event to guide its students on various aspects related to pre departure and the tasks students need to fulfill before departing to their respective study abroad countries. To get a deep insight on the same, kindly attend the event by getting in touch with Edwise counselors.
