The Test of English as a Foreign Language is a standardized English proficiency test that assesses English Language skills in the areas of Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking. Candidates who wish to pursue further studies at an undergraduate or graduate level are required to take the TOEFL to demonstrate their English proficiency. Like the other sections on the TOEFL ibt, the speaking section is delivered via computer
In the Speaking section, you will be asked to speak to on a variety of topics that draw on personal experience, campus based situations and academic material. The speaking section of the TOEFL takes approximately 20 minutes. You will be asked a total of 6 speaking tasks. The first two independent tasks will require you to draw upon your own ideas, thoughts and experiences while responding. The other four integrated tasks will assess you on how well you base your spoken response on the listening passage or on both the listening and reading passage. Response time for each question will range from 45 to 60 seconds. You will be evaluated on delivery, language use and topic development. Familiarising yourself with the instructions before you take the test, will help you prepare for the test.
Here's how you can improve on your Speaking:
- Understand the structure of the speaking section
- Begin speaking at an even pace and avoid frequent pauses.
- Note taking is a must on this section. Do not try to write down everything that you hear. You will end up missing out on important information. Since you will be rated on your ability to speak, ensure that you use your preparation time to go over your notes and organize your ideas.
- Avoid using words that are difficult to pronounce
- Time management is another important factor on this section. Ensure that you are able to complete your response within the given time period
- Listen to how the speaker stresses on certain words. Being able to hear and recognize this pattern will help you identify important information
- Ensure that your ideas are clearly connected to one another. Use transition words to relate parts of your speech together
Tips for the Test Day
- Food or drinks will not be allowed inside the testing room, be sure to eat something before you give the exam
- Avoid whispering when giving your response, raters should be able to understand what you are saying
- Do not begin speaking until you are told to do so.
- Listen to the instructions carefully so you know what you have to do
