5 Common Challenges you’ll face while Studying Abroad

Studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally while going on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There are a number of other benefits to studying abroad; however, there are also numerous challenges.

What is it like for an Indian student to study abroad? The truth is, it is not very easy. However, everything that you go through is worth the effort. Most Indian students have tons of questions including minor queries and major concerns about their life in their host nation.

Here are a few challenges that you may encounter abroad:

1. Accommodation problems

Indian students may find it difficult to find suitable accommodation in a foreign location while pursuing higher studies. It may also be difficult to find accommodation that is near the university campus, has a good infrastructure and suits their budget.

2. Time zone annoyances

Trying to navigate two time zones on opposite ends of the planet can be frustrating at best. You constantly have to double check what times are appropriate for which time zone, and get in the habit of making phone calls super early in the morning or late in the evenings.Indian students may also feel home sick staying far away from family and friends.Students who are very close to their parents may find it tough to stay alone. Such students may feel lonely and will have to learn to manage their emotions in the absence of their close companions.

3. Financial/Monetary problems

Pursuing higher studies abroad is expensive and students may face monetary problems at some point or other. While considering the cost associated with studying abroad students have to take care of tuition costs, accommodation costs, living expenses, books, cost of traveling etc. it may also be necessary to purchase a personal computer or a laptop etc. to help oneself study. During a financial emergency, it may be difficult to arrange for necessary funds needed to take care of expenses.

4. Overcoming the language barrier

Indian students going to countries such as UK, US, Australia etc. where English is spoken as the first language, may find it difficult to overcome the language barrier. Students may find it difficult to speak fluently in English and at times may find it hard to clearly understand what the natives are saying. The use of English words and phrases may vary in different countries abroad. Although there are standard examinations such as TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), IELTS,GRE, GMAT that a student has to clear before getting admitted in a foreign university, matching the pace, accent and tone of the foreign counterparts may be challenging.

5. Living an independent lifestyle

For an Indian student it may be difficult to manage the entire cooking, cleaning, washing etc. in the beginning unless accustomed to do these jobs along with studies. Unlike India, it is very expensive and difficult to hire help to get these jobs done. In overseas countries such as UK, USA even domestic servant charge on an hourly basis which may be very difficult to afford. Hence Indian students may face problems in managing household work with studies. However, with time the students will be able to adopt such a lifestyle and learn to commute between nations, pay bills and manage expenses by themselves.
The experience abroad for an Indian student could be life altering. One may face problems but for a short-interval of 5 to 6 months, before it becomes part of their daily routine.

How To Avoid Feeling Homesick While Studying Abroad

No matter how excited you may be about college life, even the most independent freshmen can find themselves struck with homesickness. Moving away from home for the first time and starting fresh can take its toll. You may at times find yourself missing your bed or the posters on your wall. Homesickness can affect people of all ages in almost any situation, so don't be ashamed if you miss home. There are some measures that you can take to help deal with homesickness and learn to love your new environment.

Avoid spending too much Time in your Room

Staying in your room too much will only make you feel worse, as you’ll be pondering on what you miss about home. Try to keep yourself busy by taking part in some form of sport, studying at the library rather than in your room or even getting a part time job. Find something new to do on your own, learning a new skill can help you break out of your comfort zone.

Explore your surroundings

One of the main reasons we often feel homesick is not knowing what to do when in an unfamiliar surroundings; here is your chance to set aside some time to explore the town so you’ll feel more at home. In fact, not getting to know the city better is one of the biggest regrets most students have. Walk around, do some sightseeing or volunteer with the local community. You’re only around for a few years, so now’s the time to make the most of it

Create a list of what you can do in the area

Do a little research into the new area you live, and find a list of places to explore. You can visit that little cafe you've always wanted to go to or try that new burger joint a few blocks away. The more you learn about your area, the more familiar it will become to you. It will help you meet new people and will make you feel at home.

Talk with friends and family back home

Whether it’s a phone call or a text message keeping in touch with your friends and family will make you feel that you are part of things back home. Remember you need to be doing fun stuff in between as well so you have stories to tell people back home.

Maintain a journal

Keeping a journal will help you get in touch with your thoughts and process everything that is happening in your new environment. Whether you're studying abroad, in college or just moved to a new city, you will likely be experiencing new and unfamiliar sensations, keeping a journal can help you keep track of your thoughts. Research has shown that maintaining a journal can help relieve feelings of homesickness.

Do things you enjoy

Whether you’re a writer, dancer or a musician don’t stop doing the things you enjoy. It is important to set aside time for yourself especially when you are in the middle of a big change. Doing things you love will help you focus and destress.

Meet new people

A great way to meet new people is by getting involved on campus. Whether you'll share the same class together or are seated at the same table in the cafeteria, you will meet students going through the same transition of living in a new place just like yourself. Keeping yourself busy helps take your mind off of being homesickness.

10 Things You Must Do Before You Hit 25!

Your early ’20s may be your prime years, but if you think you’re coming 25th birthday is reason enough to feel older, you must keep in mind 10 things you absolutely need to do before your hit 25.

1. Study Abroad

Studying abroad is one of the most amazing opportunities you will ever experience and something everyone should consider doing. As cliché as it sounds, by studying abroad you will be more marketable to grad schools and employers because of the intangible life skills you will have picked up along the way.

Study Abroad Courses

2. While Studying Abroad, Take a Vacation

Sure, it’s so much easier to travel with your family or friends. You’re surrounded by people you know, and the fun almost never ends! However, travelling solo can be just as fulfilling, and can help you learn and move out of your comfort zone. Not to mention, you can go wherever you want, whenever you want and, the exposure to different cultures and people will help broaden your perspective on things.

3. Spend time alone

Spending time alone is crucial in order to understand yourself better. It also helps to reduce dependency and is a more crucial survival skill than you may think. But, you don’t have to move out of your family home for it. And once you think you manage on your own, take a step further and move into your own little place.

Study Abroad Courses

4. Get Wild

And by that we don’t mean throw a party and turn the place upside down. What we’re talking about is try something that you wouldn’t do otherwise like going bungee jumping, skiing, skydiving or even camping out in the wild. 25 is an age when most people conclude that they need to get serious in life and work towards achieving more practical milestones like a well-paying job and a house. So, if you’re one of them, we’d suggest you have all your fun right now.

Study Abroad Courses

5. Appreciate your family

Whether this is your family by blood or by choice, they’re important. Call them once a week, tell them exciting news face-to-face rather than via a Facebook post and make sure you remember you’re who you are because of them.

6. Get a makeover

Not because there’s anything wrong with your look right now, but if you’re someone who doesn’t really experiment with your looks as much, now is the time to do so. Get that short haircut you’ve always been reluctant to try or buy that outfit you would never be caught dead wearing. For all you know, it’ll be the most drastic thing you will be doing in a long time.

7. Quit that job

The initial years into your twenties are all about graduating and trying to find your calling. And this is usually done alongside jobs that you probably don’t like or pays you peanuts for. And, while turning 25 is all about having your act together, we’d suggest you set out to do things you actually want to do. If you wish to write, start a blog and keep at it. If you wish to donate your time to a cause, volunteer at an NGO. It might not pay you that well, but you can always pursue it alongside your regular job or until you’ve gathered some foothold.

8. Take lots of pictures

Time Really Does Fly. Take Lots of Pictures of everything -- school activities, sports events, holidays, birthdays, decorations, cool clothes, friends, and teachers. Everything. And organize them as best you can. You have no idea how much joy they will bring you later

Study Abroad Courses

9. Fulfil your fitness goals

We’re sure that you’re very busy achieving those life goals, but as you grow older, it is essential that you put in as much effort into maintaining your body. If you’re not happy about turning 25, you can at least turn 25 looking your healthiest best. And so, set some fitness goals by reconsidering your diet and trying on fun new workouts to stay in shape. Rest assured, this is one decision you won’t regret even when you turn 50!

Study Abroad Courses

10. Go 30!

And by that, we don’t mean act like you’re 30, but rather, try a 30-day challenge. It could be fitness related like a 30-day plank challenge or a more creative one like a 30-day cooking challenge. This will motivate you to get disciplined and will help sharpen your cognitive skills to learn new things faster.

What Edwise Students studying PTE says… ?

“I am writing this testimonial to Edwise International and especially to my tutor for PTE. I was tensed before giving my PTE exam because I got my passport late and I had to clear the exam in a single attempt. I explained the situation to her. She helped me a lot. Those two sessions were really very crucial for me as I scored 77/90 in PTE with 90/90 in speaking. This score has also helped me in getting a part time job in Australia as well. My tutor was very calm, understanding, I am really thankful to Edwise and for the overall experience with a Coaching Dept.”
