6 Tips on How Women Can Be Safe Whilst Studying Abroad

The number of women that are pursuing a degree abroad has risen over the years. Better job opportunities or a career change have led majority of women today to follow their dream of studying abroad. While there are several perks to an education overseas, it is important that women today pay attention to their safety too. Here are some tips on ways you can keep safe while studying abroad:

Blog On Studying Abroad by Edwise International

  • Travel in Groups

During your time abroad, traveling in groups can be a great idea. Whether it's sightseeing or simply walking around the city, exploring the city with your class mates offers you the chance to get better acquainted with each other.

  • Get a Local Number

A local number is a blessing in more ways than just one. Not only can you track your location if you lose your way, but you can also reach out to friends and seek help in times of a crisis.

  • Don't Make Yourself Out to Be a Visitor

Being all touristy makes you stand out as an out of towner. Wearing excessive jewellery and dressing inappropriately will only likely draw attention to yourself. Try and be more like a local, blend in with the culture and have fun while you do it.

  • Money Matters

You never know when you may be in need of cash, so ensure that you always have some walking around money with you. For safety purposes, you can also open an account with the local bank, this way not only is your money safe, but you won't have to worry about leaving it lying around.

  • Stay Alert

While everyone enjoys the thrill of experiencing life in a new country, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. When alone, stay on busy streets and be sure to inform your family and friends of your whereabouts at all times.

  • Public Transportation

When living in a new city, make use of the public transportation facilities available when traveling to and fro. Keep yourself updated with the local train and bus schedules and avoid getting into taxis or buses that are not registered with the city.

Common Solutions For Parents Of Study Abroad Students

Each parent longs for giving the best education to their children. Encouraging your children to think about studying abroad is an extraordinary move compared to other approaches, to empower them to take in a wide assortment of skills. Other than setting them up for their future, while considering abroad education, your child will similarly gain from an assortment of circumstances. From managing regular daily existence in another city and in another language, to meeting new people from wherever all over the world, your youngsters will be acquainted with working towards strong goals, meeting study due dates and accepting obligation for their academic accomplishment.

Being a parent, it is normal for you to be keen on your child's training. You are probably going to have a great deal of inquiries identified with abroad training. Extreme choices about when, where and what to consider are normally made by the child himself, yet as a parent, you might want to be engaged with the basic process. We accept that by being all around educated, you can assume a brilliant supporting part as a parent and guide for your child, as they start their long academic abroad adventure. It's very normal to have many feelings of trepidation and misgivings in your mind while you design your child's future abroad, yet it would be profoundly far-fetched for you to smash his/her fantasies for your apprehensions. To ensure the best possible experience for your child and maintain your own peace of mind through the process, keep in mind the following few factors.

Blog On Study Abroad Programs, Studying Overseas

  • WHEN, WHERE, HOW MUCH:

The first question to pop into any parent's mind is, “How much would it cost?” For that, first thing to be done is to decide on a location. Once you choose a country that you want to go to, you need to gather all possible information on the educational as well as subsidiary expenses such as accommodation, travel, food, and extracurricular expenses that would have to be incurred in that country. Once this is done, you should find out about the start dates of courses across various universitiesin that country and then come to a decision.

  • STAY INFORMED:

The best way to be secure and to ensure that your child will have the best possible experience while studying abroad is to do some extensive research. The most basic of them all is to start with your child's chosen destination. Know all there is to know about the country, and most importantly the University, the campus life and the options available there for international students. To be absolutely sure, yo can also check with the admissions office of the University to confirm your child's position in their institution.

  • HEALTH AND SAFETY:

The two biggest concerns of parents about their ward living abroad is their health and safety. To circumvent this problem, it is advisable to find out about the climate and weather conditions of the place where the child is headed. That way, you can be prepared as to what to expect upon arrival. Another good option is to be aware of the medical clinics and facilities as well as hospitals in and around the University so as to be prepared in case of an emergency. Another measure that should be taken is to be aware of the vaccinations that your child needs to take that are required in the visiting country. Taking said vaccines would ensure that your child is immunized against possible contractions in case of any.

  • COMMUNICATION:

Last but not the least, the most sure fire way for a parent to be at ease with their child in a different country is to have a flawless communication system in place. The technological advances of the 21st century have made this quite simple with multiple audio as well as video calling applications. All you need to do is have a phone or a computer which supports any of the n number of applications available online and a strong internet connection on both ends. Stay in touch with your child, but don't unnecessarily harangue them with calls to ease your paranoia as they would be following a different time zone plus they would be following a routine which would revolve around their University requirements.

Checklist to Keep in Mind While Rushing Into Study Abroad Application Submission

While you’re waiting for the summer to pass and for term-time to roll on up, however, you may want to follow study abroad checklist to make sure you’re as prepared as you can be for your trip. Whether you’re planning to study abroad for a month, a semester, an entire academic year or a full degree, it’s vital that you think about the important, bureaucratic things like travel insurance that will help make your time abroad run as smoothly as possible. So, you’ve been accepted onto a program at a foreign university of your choice, and are preparing to set off into the distance via plane/boat/train/parental vehicle to start your new international student life.

Blog on Study Abroad Application Submission

  • Travel insurance

It might just look like an unnecessary cost, but, in reality, travel insurance is essential. For a small, one-off payment, travel insurance will cover you if anything happens to you during your studies – be this illness, injury or theft – and will make sure you don’t spend your entire life savings on a trip to the doctor’s! In many countries, health insurance is also a requirement for international students, and you may be asked to prove you have sufficient cover.

  • Financial evidence

When applying for your student visa or further financial assistance, you’ll likely have to prove your current financial circumstances (i.e. you’ll have to prove that you have the funds to finance part or all of your study). The same may be asked of your parents if they will be supporting you. Usually, you can request these statements from your bank, or you can just print them yourself from home through online banking.

Also, if you pay a fee of any kind, like when applying for your student visa, you’ll likely be sent a receipt or confirmation. Ensure you have a copy of this as it proves you have done this, as well as the date this was processed. At the very least, use your own records of this financial transaction from your bank, building society or PayPal account which shows this transfer. This way, if you don’t receive what you are meant to, you have evidence.

  • Medical

To make sure you’re fighting fit before leaving home, it’s wise to visit your doctor for a full medical check-up and to make sure you’ve had all the vaccinations you may need for your chosen study destination. For far-off countries, these vaccinations will come at a price, but rest assured your doctor will tell you if they are completely necessary. If you need any assistance while you’re away, make sure your doctor sends a copy of your medical records abroad. Foreign prescriptions are not always honoured so it is advised that you allow yourself extra time to collect your prescription before your medication runs out.

  • Academic Scripts

Throughout your schooling, you should keep safe all academic scripts and results with grades, in chronological order. If these are not in English, they should be translated alongside the translator’s accreditation – this way admissions staff can judge whether you have the necessary grades to study there, and compare these to their own grading system. It is also worth keeping certificates for extra-curricular achievements as well.

  • Student Visa

Depending on your chosen country of study you will likely have to procure a student visa in order to be allowed in the country for the full length of study. Often, if applying for an undergraduate degree at an accredited university, the school will assist with the student visa process. This is not always the case however, so make sure to ask. If no help is offered, get straight onto the job of securing your student visa yourself. To do this you will need to contact the embassy or consulate of your country of study and may need to attend an appointment as part of your student visa application. Here you’ll be asked to bring documentation such as a university letter of approval, the aforementioned valid passport, proof of funds, and, occasionally, a return ticket for your journey home at the end your studies.

  • Passport

Of course you’re not going to forget your passport. But what you may need to ensure in the run-up to your study abroad program is whether your passport will remain valid for the duration of your travels. Processing times vary from country to country but can often take six weeks or more. If you wait until you’re abroad before renewing your passport, you’ll have to face embassy visits, queuing and even more form-filling than usual – the last things you want when in an exciting new country! Many countries, in visa applications and such, will require you to have at least six months extra on your passport beyond the end of your studies, so make sure you allow for your study time, any additional travelling time, plus an additional six months. If you do need to renew your passport, make sure you apply as soon as possible to avoid being without a passport come start of term.

  • Re-Check

Once you have all the right documents, re-check it as many times as you want. This will take you one step closer to your dream university. Have attested copies of all the documents in a folder and arrange it according to the check list.
