As you gear up for an exciting admission tour this season, we bring to you some known and unknown facts! Looks like,MBA really is a one-way ticket to the land of money, happiness and career satisfaction. Some urban legends never die. But MBA myths are even harder to digest. A million coaching centres, lakhs of websites and thousands of colleges are trying to sell you the MBA dream. And then there is the world – your lovely folks, nosey friends, and then your family. This could be the most shady part of your MBA.
But is MBA worth all the anxiety?
For that, you need better access to recruiters.MBA does not guarantee a new career. It just gives a better direction to your present career. Aspirants often think that after B-school, they’ll come up with innovative solutions and drive the organisation to Success. Firms worth thousands of crores are not sitting hawk-eyed, dying to tap an MBA graduate so that they can drive them out of red. They have several think-pools who can maximize profits. And an MBA grad is just a small fish among those big think-pools.
So if you are an IT professional or a website designer, an MBA will not secure a career in finance or marketing. This myth surfaced a few years ago and really took off when business schools started accepting both GRE and GMAT scores for the application process. It stemmed from the fact that only the average GMAT score was reported by the ranking institutions, whereas the average GRE score generally remained unpublished. The placement teams have power to decide on placement activities, maintaining relations and communication with companies, and nobody can question what they do.
Be careful.Looking at the questions broadly it may seem most schools are asking the same question, but when read in detail the expectation in the answers differ from school to school. For example, one school expects you to focus more on why you want an MBA, while other school would like to know why are you applying to that school specifically. Another example: one school would like you to focus on describing a success or failure while the other school will require you to focus on what you learnt from that success or failure.
Minor differences in the wording of questions completely change the scope of the answers.Business schools are interested in an overall evaluation of your skill set, be it via the GRE or GMAT; there is no difference in how they consider the test results of either format. Plus, if you have already invested time in studying for the GMAT, it is best to double-down on that same test rather than switching to another format and content type. Most likely, you will do better by going deeper on the same test. Writing essay for one school and re-using it in other school’s essays is perfectly fine. Not wise.
The process is so secretive that placement team members are not allowed to even talk about anything remotely related to placements with anyone.A little background on placement teams in MBA institutes. Like in every top college, placements don't come under the responsibilities of professors. They simply don’t care. The deans and all do care because they want good placement so as to keep the rankings high. So, the placements come under a placement professor and a placement team - a group of 10 students selected/ elected from current MBA students. The selection/ election criteria is different for different institutes. In some institutes one team takes care of each placement session for two years and in others different placement teams are selected/elected to take care of different placement sessions.
