November 2018
USA is the most powerful country in the world. It is developed and advanced in every sector. The education sector is no exception. It is growing exponentially day after day. Obvious reasons for these are many starting with high class education, existence of world's topmost universities, strong education system, stringent law system, security and safety, etc. USA was a home to approximately 1.23 million international students as of 2017. USA, therefore is the most attractive study destination for all the students wishing to study abroad. Before you prep to fly to the USA, you should know what life is like for international students out there.
- Culture:
America is a blender of various cultures. Being the most developed country, it is a home to people from different nationalities and backgrounds. Hence studying in the US enables international students to interact with people coming from completely different way of living. It teaches the students to co-operate and positively accept the cultures of all. Although the US allows one to promote their own culture, it has culture of its own. The Americans have strongly imbibed in them the concept of independence and individualism. They don’t like depending on anyone but take charge of their own lives. America is a free country believes in equality for all. They also a have an informal behaviour.
- Recreational Activities and Places to Visit:
People of America are social and love to interact with each other. For recreational purpose international students like other Americans, can indulge in activities like partying in the clubs, attend live events and fun festivals, hit the beach, enjoy outdoor sports, etc. There are many places that are worth visiting like the New Orleans, Louisiana, Washington, District of Columbia (D.C), Las Vegas, Nevada, The Grand Canyon, Arizona, New York City and many more.
- Housing / Accommodation:
There are a number of options available with the students which include On-Campus and Off-Campus housing, and homestays. Many universities offer on-campus housing facilities in areas within the universities which become like a small town on their own. US universities also have dormitories where students can reside. Here students can also meet other students and engage themselves in activities. For off-campus housing, the off-campus housing office will help you find an apartment. You can also ask your friends if they have any suggestions or can also take help of the real estate agents. If you are not comfortable to stay alone then the option of homestay is always open.
- Safety:
The USA is a safe nation to study in with its law and regulations well in place. Still, one should be alert and careful. One must have a vigilant eye capable enough to suspect the wrong activities happening around, and also take proper care of your belongings. Surround yourself with people who you can count as trustworthy. One most important thing one must do before leaving to study in the US is to a detailed research about the campus and residence life of the university you have opted for.
- Food / Cuisines:
American food has spread all over the world. USA is the land that serves one of the most delicious dishes in the world. Hence it is very less likely for one to go to sleep empty stomach.
- Expenses:
Without any doubt, quality education in the US is expensive but the investment one makes now is sure to give higher returns in the future. Nevertheless, plan your expenses strategically. Cut down the cost where it is possible. Do not carry large amount of cash and try to keep transactions as digital as possible.
