Useful Information on GRE - Quantitative Reasoning

GRE or Graduate Record Examination is a world renowned admission test required to be given by the candidates desirous of taking admission to graduate programs primarily in the areas of engineering and sciences at education institutions in USA. The GRE is designed to help graduate schools assess the qualifications of applicants for advanced study in technical fields. GRE scores are used by more than 3,000 graduate programs throughout the world

The Quantitative Reasoning measure of the GRE assesses your

  • Basic Mathematical Skills
  • Understanding of elementary mathematical concepts
  • Ability to reason quantitatively and to model and solve problems with quantitative methods

Some of the Quantitative Reasoning questions are posed in real- life settings, while others are posed in purely mathematical settings. Many of these questions are word problems. The skills, concepts and abilities are assessed in four areas

Arithmetic topics include properties  and types of integers such as divisibility, factorization, prime numbers, remainders and odd even integers; arithmetic operations, exponents and roots; and concepts such as estimation, percent, ratio, rate, absolute value, the number line, decimal representation and sequences of numbers.

Algebra topics include operations with exponents; factoring and simplifying algebraic expressions; relations, functions, equations and inequalities; solving linear and quadratic equations and inequalities; solving simultaneous equations and inequalities; setting up equations to solve word problems and coordinate geometry, including graph of functions, equations and inequalities, intercepts and slopes of lines.

Geometry topics include parallel and perpendicular lines, circles, and triangles- including isosceles, equilateral and 30-60 and 90 degree triangles- quadrilaterals, other polygons, congruent and similar figures, three dimensional figures, area, perimeter, volume, the Pythagorean Theorem and angle measurement in degrees. The ability to construct proofs is not tested.

Data Analysis topics include basic descriptive statistics, such as mean, median, mode, range, standard deviation, interquarile range, quartiles and percentiles; interpretation of data in tables and graphs such as line graphs, bar graphs, circle graphs, boxplots, scatterplots and frequency distributions; elementary probability such as probabilities of compound events and independent events; random variables and probability distributions including normal distributions and counting methods such as combinations, permutations and Venn diagrams

Quantitative Reasoning Question Types

Quantitative Reasoning measure has four types of questions:

  • Quantitative Comparison questions
  • Multiple-choice questions- Select one answer choice
  • Multiple choice questions- Select one or more answer choices
  • Numeric Entry questions

Each question appears either independently as a discrete question or as part of a set of questions called a data interpretation set. All of the questions are based on the same data presented in tables, graphs or other displays of data

Tips for answering

  • Become familiar with the answer choices. Quantitative Comparison questions always have the same answer choices, so be careful

  • Avoid unnecessary computations, Transform or estimate one or both of the given quantities only as much as is necessary to compare them

  • Remember that geometric figures are not necessarily drawn to scale. If any aspect of a given figure is not fully determined, try to redraw the figure

  • Plug in numbers, If one or both of the quantities are algebraic expressions, easy numbers can be substituted for the variables and compare the resulting quantities in your analysis. Consider all kinds of appropriate numbers before you give an answer for e.g. zero, positive, negative numbers, small and large numbers, fractions and decimals

  • Simplify the comparison, If both quantities are algebraic or arithmetic expressions and you cannot easily see a relationship between them, simplify the comparison

Are you thinking Twice about Studying Abroad?

Studying abroad is not an easy decision to make. If you really don’t think it’s for you then don’t go, but don’t believe that. It’s only natural to be a bit fearful of change and facing new and challenging experiences.

Anyone who has even a remote desire to go abroad should decide to do it. If for some reason you can’t last the semester or year and you have to come home, what’s the worst that can happen? You lose one semester of school and graduate when you’re 23 instead of 22. In the scheme of life, that’s not that big a difference, and the chances of that happening are minimal.

One of the biggest fears of going abroad is losing good friends and be really far out of the loop when you return home. First and foremost, your being abroad shouldn’t change anything. You can still talk via Skype and phones and, if your friends are true friends, they will be excited for you to go and do something with your life, as well as be understanding when you come home.

There is still the possibility that you will feel out of the loop when you go back home, but you’ll catch up on the latest music trends, TV shows and fashion crazes pretty quickly. Besides, the stuff you pick up while abroad is probably more valuable anyway.

Need help convincing the parents? Do they think it’s just a way to waste time, spend money, and get out of studying abroad for a semester or year, or working for the summer? It’s important that they understand the benefits of studying abroad.

Tell them that while you’re going to have a good time and an active social life when you go abroad; you’re also going to have a unique educational experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life. Since you’re looking at this article, why don’t you share it with your parents? They will be amazed by the thousands of study abroad opportunities that are available to you, and will understand why you are so excited about the prospect of spending a summer, semester, or even a full year in another country. Consider reading or sharing this article with them too. It outlines the different questions and topics you should discuss with them as you research, apply and plan for study abroad.

Why Study Abroad: A Personal Decision

As cliché as it sounds, by studying abroad you will be more marketable to grad schools and employers because of the intangible life skills you will have picked up along the way. Think of it as gaining a sort of cultural capital. The fact that you’ve studied abroad will answer many people’s questions about the type of person you are even before they have to ask.

Perhaps one of the best ways to experience culture is to live it, which is exactly what you’ll be doing as a study abroad student. Aside from gaining an understanding for cultures other than your own, you will also gain intangible skills. Independence, time management, organization, social skills and self-confidence will all develop exponentially while you’re abroad.

There will be a moment while abroad when you’ll realize that you’ve made the right decision: Treasure that moment. That moment will come when all the stress from the first few weeks of getting acclimated is finally over, and it’s at that point that you will fully grasp what you’re doing, the magnitude of your decision to go abroad and your new found drive to take advantage of every opportunity that lies ahead of you.

IELTS- Information & Advice

The International English Language Testing System is a standardized English proficiency test. It assesses English Language skills in the areas of Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. It is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP- Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL EXAMINATIONS. It is graded on a scale of 0 – 9, and is valid for a period of 2 years

IELTS has two types of modules - Academic and General Training. Academic Module is required to be given by students who plan to study at an undergraduate or a postgraduate level. While, General Training Module is generally a prerequisite for the people who either want to pursue vocational studies or plan to immigrate

Brief on each section

Listening has 4 sections and 40 questions in all. It lasts for 40 minutes, which  includes time to transfer the answers to the main answer sheet

Reading has 3 passages and 40 questions in total. Candidates are given an hour to complete reading comprehension. Time management here is very important. The candidate should give 20 minutes per passage

Writing  (Academic Module) has 2 writing tasks. The total time alloted for this section is 1 hour.

Task 1 is primarily report writing (explaining diagrams and charts, making comparisons where needed). Task 1 must not be less than 150 words, the time alloted for this task is 20 minutes

Task 2 is an essay and candidates are required to draft an essay on the topic given. This essay must not be less than 250 words. Students are advised to spend 40 minutes on the same

General Training Module also has 2 writing tasks. Task1 presents a Letter Prompt (formal or informal). Candidates must write at least 150 words for the same. Task 2 is the same as that of academic module

Speaking has 3 parts and lasts for about 11-14 minutes. It is on a one-to-one basis with the candidate

Part 1: The Examiner will ask the student general questions, that relates to his/her work, studies, hobbies etc. This part lasts for 4 to 5 minutes

Part 2: In this part, the candidate is given a topic to speak on, this topic is printed on a task card

The candidates are given one minute to think and can even note down points. They have to speak on the given topic for about 1 minute. This part lasts for 3 to 4 minutes

Part 3 is a two way discussion with the examiner (these questions are related to the part 2 topic). The discussion lasts for 4 to 5 minutes

Tips for the IELTS

  • Look for Keywords in the passages for reading comprehension

  • Be attentive when you listen to the audio, DO NOT miss out on questions

  • Be loud and clear when you speak, understand the question, be sure to fully answer the questions directed to you

  • Remember that your personal opinion in Task 1 is NOT needed. Be sure to just write about what you see in the report and make comparisons where needed

  • Plan your essay in Task 2, be sure not to drift away from the topic at hand. Be clear with your points and the way that you organise your ideas

What Edwise Students Says...

“I am very thankful to Edwise for helping me score an 8.0 band in my IELTS. I joined the IELTS classes with a lot of apprehensions. But from the first class itself I felt extremely comfortable. The faculty here has provided me with personal training and this has helped me clear my examination with flying colors. I would once again like to thank the entire staff of Edwise who helped my dream come true.”
Shruti Preman - IELTS Coaching

“My experience with Edwise coaching was very good! I started coaching with 5 other students and with no appropriate knowledge or idea about IELTS, its procedures and protocols. My faculty was a boon to us by giving us not only the thorough insight of the IELTS, but made it a fun process for us. To me personally, I couldn't have expected a better teacher for it. The faculty at Edwise not just makes us feel involved, but gives us a good support especially in disciplines that we lack in. The teaching pedalogy at Edwise helps us find our strengths and weakness & ace the exams. The job and concern not just ends after IELTS, but also follows up with us on our exam and our results.”
Vizak Gagrat -IELTS Coaching

“After enrolling in Edwise I felt that I am at the right place to pursue further higher education, because the knowledge and the guidance given by the faculty here gave me a positive look towards my goal. The coaching was well planned and proper attention was given by the faculty guiding me. I have already suggested few of my friends to go forward with IELTS through Edwise coaching.”
