The
Writing Section consists of two different writing tasks:
An
Integrated task in which you read a short passage for about 3 minutes
and then listen to a short lecture that directly addresses the points made in
the reading. You are then required to draft an essay based on the summarization
of the listening passage and explain how they relate to the reading passage.
This task demonstrates your ability to communicate in writing what you have
read and heard about. You have 20 minutes for this task with a word count of
150-200 words
An
Independent task is one in which you are asked to give an opinion about
a general topic. You are then asked to support your opinion with relevant
reasons and examples. You have 30 minutes for this task with a word count of
250-300 words
Essay-Writing
Tips
Integrated
Writing Task
- Always take notes
- Look for the main idea of the reading passage
- While listening, pay attention to any information that is opposite of the points in the reading passage
- Your task here is to explain how the points in the listening relate to points in the reading. You are NOT being asked for your own opinion
- Ensure that you do not misrepresent the points from the reading and the lecture
Independent
Writing Task
- Understand the given topic. Ensure that you write what the essay is asking of you
- Keep track of your time. Use your time wisely, that way you will have sufficient time to re-read what you have just written
- Make sure that your essay is well organized, with relevant explanations
- Ensure that you are consistent with the language you use, with appropriate word choice and minimal grammatical errors
