The
Test of English as a Foreign Language popularly known as the TOEFL is
a standardized English proficiency tests that assess a student’s
English Language skills, pertaining to areas that include, Listening,
Reading, Writing and Speaking.
This
study
abroad
test is accepted by all institutions in the USA and by some
institutions in UK and Canada as well.
Offered
30-40 times a year, it is given by those students who are desirous of
undertaking further studies at the undergraduate or graduate levels.

Scoring
TOEFL
is scored out 120 and a score of 100+ is considered good. Each
section of the exam, is graded on a scale of 0-30 on a 1 point
increment. The Composite score is addition to all the scores in the
exam.
Test
Format
The
TOEFL has 4 sections, namely the Reading, Listening, Speaking and
Writing sections.
- Reading: This section tests the students ability to read as well as comprehend passages whilst at the same time answer questions pertaining to them. This section comprises of 3-4 passages with each passage having 10 questions. This section approximately lasts for 54-72 minutes.
- Listening: The basic purpose of this section is to assess the students ability to to comprehend spoken English. This is important because whilst attaining an education abroad, students will have to interact in an academic environment and the ability to listen becomes important. The section comprises of 3-4 lectures with 6 questions in each. It also comprises of 2-3 conversations that have 5 questions in total. The overall duration of the test is 41-57 minutes.
- Speaking: Overseas education requires of its candidates to smoothly converse in English. The section comprises of 4 question prompts that includes 1 independent question and 3 integrated questions. Students are given a few seconds to think, and the time allotted to speak keeps altering as per the question format. Per question, the student gets an approximate of 45 seconds to 1 minute. This section of the test lasts for 17 mins.
- Writing: Undoubtedly, this section tests student’s ability to express themselves through a written text. It comprises of 2 tasks, namely Integrated Writing and Independent Essay. In the Integrated Writing section, students are required to read a passage, listen to a lecture and create a technical essay based on the passage and the lecture. The time allotted for this section is 20 minutes. In the Independent Essay section, students are given a general topic and within 30 minutes they have to write a general essay.
Miscellaneous
Details
The
score of this exam is valid for a period of 2 years and the score
reporting time is approximately 10 calendar days. An internet based
test, the administration frequency is 3-4 times a month.
