GRE: The New Shorter Way

 

The Graduate Research Exam (GRE) is a standardised test that is widely accepted by many graduate and business schools for admissions. GRE scores are asked during admissions as a part of the application process and are mainly required for specific fields such as engineering, natural sciences, humanities, etc.

What are the new changes in GRE?

The shorter version of GRE examination was introduced for reducing the test time. Accordingly, the time taken to declare the results has been reduced. Here are some key details to be noted for the new shorter GRE.

·       The test duration of the new shorter GRE has been reduced to 2 hours 45 minutes instead of 4 hours of the old GRE.

·       The number of questions in verbal and quantitative reasoning sections have been reduced, that is, both sections will have 46 lesser questions.

·       The 10-minute scheduled break has been removed.

·       The results of the exams will be declared in 8-10 days unlike the old GRE where results were declared in 10-15 days.

·       One analytical essay, Analytical writing, Quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning will remain the same.

·       The shorter GRE exam will be available in hybrid mode. This means that the GRE tests will be available for both the GRE at test centers and the same test taken at home.

What is the new format?

The new format of GRE has 3 sections. Each section has a specific time allotted. Following table shows the sections and the number of questions along with the time allotted for it:

Who is eligible to take the GRE?

·       There is no specific age limit for taking the GRE exam.

·       The candidate appearing for the GRE exam should necessarily possess a graduate degree from a recognised university.

·       The test-takers must provide valid documents that meet the requirements of the Educational Testing Service (ETS), which administers the GRE. This usually includes a government-issued photo ID.

What is the limit of attempts for GRE exam?

The exam takes place throughout the year. The desired candidate can apply for a GRE exam up to 5 times in a year with a gap of 21 days between each exam.

As the number of questions have been reduced instead of the whole format being changed, the applicants of GRE can still refer to the syllabus/guides that were used for old GRE. Here are some guides one can refer:

Do’s and Dont’s for GRE Exam

While preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), it is required to follow certain do’s and dont’s in order to increase the chances of success in the exam. Here are some important points to be kept in mind 

Do’s

1.     Make a Schedule:

Applicants for GRE must make a schedule in order to prepare for the exams. Also, time for each section should be allotted to check the strenghts and weaknesses.

2.     Use Official Materials:

Offical GRE materials such as GRE official guide can be used to prepare for the exams.

3.     Take Practice Tests:

GRE practice tests should be taken on a regular basis to get a gauge of the progress and test the progress in the particular section.

4.     Learn Time Management:

By practising the practice tests, time management skills are sharpened. During the test, it is best to avoid challenging questions at the start and save it for later.

5.     Revision time:

For brushing the vocabulary, maths and writing skills. One can use flashcards, learn new words daily, write and read challenging paragraphs, solve various types of maths problems and practise writing essays.

6.     Test Day Preparation:

On the day of the exam, one needs to bring along the ID and the admission test card.

GRE Training at Edwise

Test Format

  • Analytical Writing (One section with two separately timed tasks) with 30 minutes per task

  • Quantitative Reasoning (Two sections) 20 questions per section, with a time of 35 minutes per section

Test Preparation

For the Quantitative part, every session begins with explaining concepts of a particular topic. After the concepts are explained, teachers solve different types of problems, and show how the concepts can be applied. The students are given about 25 questions of Problem Solving and Quantitative Comparison types to solve in class. The teachers remain in class while the students solve these problems, and guide them if they face any difficulty. Home assignments are given, and include approximately the same number of questions. Towards the end of each session, time is devoted to discuss difficulties of previous home assignments.

The Verbal part starts with a detailed introduction to different question types such as Reading Comprehension and Discrete Questions, practice exercises are then assigned from the GRE Official Guide. After completion of individual exercises, our teachers engage in a detailed discussion with the students in order to understand the reasoning and approach followed by them, and in turn guides them with the proper approach.

The Essay topics for the GRE are chosen from the official pool, and are then discussed with the students. After these essays are discussed, guidelines are given for the composition of these essays.

GRE Vs GMAT

1. Who can opt for giving the GRE and GMAT?

Students who wish to pursue their MS or MBA can give the GRE. However, only some colleges accept GRE for MBA. The GMAT on the other hand, can be given by students who want to pursue a career in management.

2. Does the GRE and the GMAT have the same sections?

Yes, both the GRE and the GMAT have Verbal, Quantitative and Analytical Writing sections, however the GMAT does have an Integrated Reasoning section, which is not included in the GRE

3. What type of questions does the GRE and GMAT have?

The Verbal part of the GRE consists of Reading Comprehension, Discrete questions and AWA. This AWA consists of two types of essays, one issue essay and one argument essay, while the Quantitative section consists of Problem Solving The Verbal section of the GMAT includes Reading Comprehension, Sentence Correction, Critical Reasoning and AWA. Quantitative includes Problem Solving and Data sufficiency

4. How many questions appear on the GRE and GMAT exam?

The GRE has a total of 100 questions, which is inclusive of the experimental section, however only 80 questions out of the given 100 are graded. The Verbal and Quantitative section both consist of 40 questions each. The GMAT has a total of 78 questions, verbal has 41 questions with a total of 75 minutes allotted for this section, while quantitative has 37questions with a similar time frame.

5. How is the GRE and GMAT scored?

The GRE is scored out of a total of 340, and is broken down into Verbal (170) and Quant (170) Essays are not included in this score, each essay is graded out of 6, but an average of both essays are taken.
The GMAT is scored between a range of 200-800 overall; each section is further sub-scored on a scale of 0-60. Here the Analytical Writing is scored on a total of 6.

6. How is the GRE and GMAT different?

GRE is a section adaptive test. It means if you have solved a section correctly, the next section will have a higher difficulty level. The GMAT in turn is a question adaptive test. A correct answer increases the level of difficulty for the next question, and an incorrect answer will lead to a less difficult question.
