How the Test Is Organized
The redesigned SAT has four tests, Reading, Writing and Language and Math. The essay is optional. The test is structured as follows
- Reading has 52 questions, with 65 mins for this section
- Writing and Language has 44 questions with 35 mins alloted for this section
- Essay (optional) has one task, with a total of 50 mins for this task
- Math has 58 questions, with a time frame of 80 mins for this section
Brief on Each Section
Reading
Each passage is followed by a number of questions. After reading the passage, choose the best option based on what is implied in the passage and in the accompanying graphs (such as a table, graph) Mentioned below are some tips that can be used for this section
- n short reading passages, first read the question, then read the passage; In long reading passages, first read the passage, then read the question
- When asked to find the main idea, go over the opening and summary sentences of each paragraph
- When asked about an attitude or tone of the passage, look out for words that convey emotions, express values or paint pictures
- When asked to give the meaning of an unfamiliar word, look for nearby context clues
For some questions, you will consider how the passage may be revised to improve the expression of ideas. For others, you will consider how the passage might be edited to correct errors in sentence structure, usage or punctuation. A passage or a question may be accompanied by either a table or a graph that you will consider as you make revising and editing decisions. Many questions include a No Change option; select that option if you think the best choice is to leave the portion of the passage as it is
Essay
The essay gives you an opportunity to show how effectively you can read and comprehend a passage, and write an essay analyzing the same. In your essay, you should demonstrate that you have read the passage carefully, present a clear and logical analysis and use language precisely. Your essay must be written on the lines provided in your answer booklet. Only what you write on the lined pages of your answer booklet will be evaluated

For questions 1 to 15, select the best option from the choices given, and fill in the corresponding circle on your answer sheet. For questions 16 to 20, solve the given problem and enter your answer in the grid on the answer sheet
