TOEFL Vs PTE

http://edwiseinternational.com/

Ever wonder the difference between these TOEFL and the PTE English tests for university admittance? TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is currently the most common for non- native English speakers. The TOEFL is often a requirement at most colleges and universities in the U.S., Canada and other English-speaking countries. In addition, government agencies, licensing bodies, businesses or scholarship programs might also require the TOEFL. Both the TOEFL and PTE are valid for two years

The Pearson Test of English Academic is recognized by thousands of universities worldwide, the most popular being the UK, Australia, the US and Canada. It is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council, similar to the TOEFL test, the Pearson Test of English (PTE) tests in all four sections: Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. The scoring ranges from 10 to 90, and includes your overall score, communicative skills scores and enabling skills scores. The score is based on performance on all items in the test. The test is computer based and takes about three hours to complete; results are available in 5 working days. You may retake the test as many times as you wish to. The main differences from the TOEFL include:

Automated speech and writing scoring providing consistent and accurate grading
Score reports offering recorded speech samples to admissions offices at universities worldwide
Question types including fill in the blanks, match the items, select multiple answer choices in the same question

The Testing of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is created by the Educational Testing Service and is administered in more than 180 countries, making it the most accessible test in the world. Students can use this test to study in the UK and other European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, Korea, in addition to the United States and Canada. The test is scored from 0-30 in each section, on a total of 120, and takes four hours to complete. Results for the TOEFL are available 10 days after the test some tasks require test takers to combine more than one skill. Integrated tasks help learners effectively communicate in academic environments they choose to enter. These tasks require test takers to
  • Read, listen and then speak in response to a question
  • Listen and then speak in response to a question
  • Read, listen and then write in response to a question
What Edwise Students studying TOEFL & PTE says...

I clearly remember the day I started my TOEFL coaching, after seeing the different sections of TOEFL I was sure I won't pass the test. But my faculty's support and personalized attention helped me. TOEFL being an internet based test, practice was very important. Edwise provided me with number of mock tests which boosted my confidence. I thank the entire Edwise team for the same

Shabbir Khambati - TOEFL Coaching

My TOEFL class here at Edwise has been started great. I have experienced good changes in my performance. Good attention is given on individual students and the students weakest points are worked upon really well. Totally satisfied! My faculty is awesome teacher and a guide. Learned a lot of things and would surely look forward to my bright future. Thank you Edwise.

Reshmi Bhaduri – TOEFL Coaching

I am writing this testimonial to Edwise International and especially to my tutor for PTE. I was tensed before giving my PTE exam because I got my passport late and I had to clear the exam in a single attempt. I explained the situation to her. She helped me a lot. Those two sessions were really very crucial for me as I scored 77/90 in PTE with 90/90 in speaking. This score has also helped me in getting a part time job in Australia as well. My tutor was very calm, understanding, I am really thankful to Edwise and for the overall experience with a Coaching Dept.

Things Every Undergraduate Candidate Should Know Before Studying in UK & USA

http://www.edwiseinternational.com/index.asp

Here is a list of things every undergraduate candidate should know before they think about whether study abroad is the right choice.

CONSISTENT MARKS Different academic criteria count in different places

UK- If you want to study in the UK, your Class 10 board marks and your predicted Class 12 board score will be taken into account for admission

USA- Those who wish to study in the USA should know that every school report card and mark sheet must be sent to the college with the application from Class 9 onward. No report card can be omitted. Board scores are also taken into consideration, but continuous assessments from Class 9 to Class 12 are important criteria for USA universities.

Study in UK and USA

APPLICATION TIMING Applications must be submitted eight to ten months before the college year starts (between August and September)

UK- For most students this means that around November of the Class 12 application deadlines begin and continue through February for some colleges.

USA- The majority of deadlines are December 31 of Class 12. Being prepared for application submission takes at least six months, taking into account standardized testing (example, SAT or ACT) and essay writing. So this means in and around May of Class 11 (or 1.5 years before you will attend college), you need to be engaged in the application process, preferably with your testing completed.

NON-ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS While experience is more important for UK colleges, extra- curricular activities are important for the USA

UK- UK colleges are most interested in whether an applicant is prepared to commit to his or her chosen course of study.

USA-
USA colleges are seeking well-rounded class of students - they want the incoming batch of students to fit together like a puzzle of people with different strengths and interests who can add diverse perspectives to the campus. For this reason the application process prioritizes strong extra-curricular interests including sports, arts, music, student leadership or social service.

TESTING

UK-
Depending on the course of interest, applications to the UK can require testing. You will only come to know the required tests and their timings once you have decided on your course.

USA-
Only USA colleges require the SAT.
Imperial College has specific testing requirements for engineering applicants, whereas another college may not require any engineering test. Also, check English proficiency testing requirements carefully - visa processing may require it. And keep in mind that some colleges in the USA do not accept IELTS, though UK accepts only IELTS and not TOEFL.

COURSE SELECTION

UK-
UK colleges are like India, students select a course and they are committed to study that subject for three years. There is no option to switch, nor are there cross-disciplinary, add-on subjects.

USA-
In the USA, however, students are allowed to change their major course of study within the four years of their college education and/or add on minor subjects of study. In fact, statistics suggest that at least 80% of USA college students change their major at least once. This is allowed because often students discover course options that are more enriching than what they had originally chosen.

These points reflect the basic knowledge students and their families should have if they want to pursue undergraduate studies abroad. Beyond this, there are innumerable nitty-gritty details that need to be attended to before an application is ready. Planning ahead is t he best strategy for success.

Planning The GRE

http://edwiseinternational.com/

The GRE is designed to measure your verbal, quantitative and analytical writing skills that you have developed in the course of your academic career. Each of these sections focuses on skills necessary for success in graduate school: the higher you score the more likely you will be to complete your graduate degree. In most places, the computer based test is available on a continuous basis throughout the year.

In the GRE Revised General Test, you will be able to change your answers, all within a section. In addition, a calculator is available on the quantitative reasoning section to reduce the emphasis on computation. The total testing time is 3 hours and 45 minutes, which includes the unscored section

The Analytical Writing task requires you to provide focused responses to questions, and to demonstrate your ability in responding to the task presented
The Verbal Reasoning section measures your ability to analyze and evaluate written material and synthesize information obtained from it; understand the meanings of words, sentences and the ability to understand what you read and how you apply your reasoning skills
The Quantitative Reasoning section tests basic mathematical concepts; however it includes more data analysis and real life scenarios to better gauge your skills

TEST STRUCTURE
  • Analytical Writing consists of two writing tasks: one issue task and one argument, both separately timed at 30 minutes each task
  •  Two Verbal Reasoning sections consists of 20 questions per section, the time allotted is 30 minutes per section
  • Two Quantitative Reasoning sections consists of 20 questions per section, time allotted per section is 35 minutes
  • One unscored section, typically a verbal reasoning or quantitative reasoning section that will appear at any point in the test

TEST TAKING STRATEGIES

  • Some questions on the Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning sections require you to select a single answer choice, while others require you to select one or more answer choices and yet some require you to enter a numeric answer. Ensure that when answering a question, you fully understand the type of response required
  •  When taking the computer based GRE revised test, you can skip questions that you have difficulty answering. The mark and review feature allows you to mark questions that you would like to come back to during the time provided to work on that section. In addition, you can review questions that you have already answered and change your answers provided you have time left on that section
  • The Verbal and Quantitative reasoning scores are determined by the number of questions you answer correctly. There is no negative marking for an incorrect answer, try to increase your scores on both these sections by answering every question
  • Work as quickly as you can without being careless. Do not waste time considering questions you find difficult
  • Answer the questions on the Verbal and Quantitative sections that you can answer with certainty. Go back and answer the questions that require more thinking, concluding with the difficult questions
  • During the actual GRE revised general test, you may only work on one section at a time and only for the time allotted. Once you complete a section, you cannot go back

In addition to the total score and the section scores, the redesigned SAT will report three test scores that will range from 10 to 40; these scores will reflect your achievement in Reading, Writing and Language and Math

Advantages & Challenges of Studying Abroad

March 2016

For many students, going away to college is the first time that they will live away from their parents or hometown. University life affords freedom, independence, and an opportunity to gain life skills that will be used your day to day life while this certainly is a major event, getting the most out of your college experience may involve going beyond your university’s campus.
Study Abroad
Off-campus volunteer and work opportunities may be the farthest you’ll want to venture from your college campus. But you may want to consider studying abroad.

Studying abroad offers a unique opportunity to grow academically, professionally, and personally while going on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. There are a number of other benefits to studying abroad; however, there are also numerous challenges. Consider the pros and cons, and decide if studying abroad may be right for you.

Advantages of Studying Abroad

Experience a Foreign Culture

Visiting foreign lands in person, however, is an entirely different experience. When you study abroad, you participate in the day-to-day life of a new locale, gaining first-hand understanding and new appreciation of the culture.

Improve Your Second Language Skills

You may already be fluent in a second language, or you might study abroad in one of the many countries where English is spoken as a first language. However, studying abroad can provide you with a perfect opportunity to learn a new foreign language.

Being surrounded by native speakers affords you the chance to immerse yourself in the language, which can expedite your retention and fluency. Furthermore, if you travel to a country in which the primary language is one you’ve studied in school, you can add to your vocabulary colloquial words and phrases that may not appear in the textbooks.

Explore Your Own Heritage

Students whose familial heritage stems from abroad will often choose to explore their ethnicity and ancestry. In fact, reports show that minority students benefit both personally and academically when they have studied abroad in the country of their family’s origin.

Pursue an Activity You Wouldn’t at Home

Studying abroad is a chance for you to be adventurous, explore the unknown, and try your hand at activities that may not be offered in your home state. For example, if you’re studying abroad in Argentina, you can try numerous adventure sports, from zip-lining, to rafting, to mountain biking. If you enjoy heights, you can try paragliding. No matter what you choose, it’s sure to be an unforgettable experience.

Learn How to Communicate Across Cultures

In today's increasingly global society, it’s important to possess the skills to communicate across cultures – and this means understanding more than just a different language. Studying abroad helps you become familiar with the customs and traditions of the country in which you are studying, in addition to the language. By interacting with locals, you can develop an appreciation for the culture and its differences from your own.

Become More Independent

Studying abroad removes you from the normal support network that you are accustomed to back home. While on the one hand, being away from friends and family can seem daunting, it is also a chance for you to hone your own skills and gain some independence.
Whether it’s washing your laundry or buying groceries, you will learn to take responsibility for your actions. When you return home, your increased independence will be very useful – it can help you in your job search, at home, or in your day-to-day routines.

Manage Your Own Finances

One major aspect of being an independent adult is having the ability to manage your own finances. Regardless of whether your study abroad program is financed by a scholarship, grant, or another source of income, chances are that it will be your responsibility to pay the bills.
Furthermore, living in a new country will help you learn and understand a new form of currency, and familiarize yourself with the various living expenses. Understanding how to manage your expenses will especially be beneficial when you no longer rely on the support of your family.

Increase Your Employment Prospects

Employers value prospective candidates with international experience, foreign language skills, and the ability to communicate across cultures. If you’re interested in pursuing a career in international relations, diplomacy, or government, these skills will be especially useful.
Use your experience studying abroad to expand your set of abilities, and make these a determining factor that will separate you from the others in a pool of applicants.

Form New and Rewarding Relationships

Without your regular support group of friends and family, you will be confronted with new situations on a daily basis. However, studying abroad offers you the chance to meet new people and form friendships that may last a lifetime.
Whether you’re living with a host family or in a student residence, make an effort to form relationships with those around you. Not only will you have someone around to console you when you are homesick, you will also know people that you can have fun with. Recreation is an important part of the studying abroad experience, and you will likely enjoy sharing your experiences much more than spending your time alone.

Network for Your Future

In addition to making friends, you can also form professional contacts while abroad. Generally speaking, course loads tend to be comparatively lighter while studying abroad, so this can be an ideal occasion to intern, work part-time or volunteer while you’re studying.
Consult your college or university to see whether they help you find internships or work placements abroad. Sometimes, you can even get credit from your home institution. When you’re finished working abroad, be sure to ask for a recommendation letter to testify that you worked abroad, and to share with future prospective employers.

Challenges to Consider

Though there are a myriad of benefits to foreign study, consider some of the drawbacks before you decide whether it’s right for you:

Homesickness Can Occur Frequently.

If you have never spent much time far from home, this could be a serious issue. You may find yourself missing the people you left back home, and the less outgoing you are the more of a problem this can become.

Academic Programs Abroad May Be Less Rigorous

Of course, this comes down to where you currently study and the program in question. Ask other students who have participated in the program you’re interested in, to see if it will be worthwhile from an academic standpoint.

It May Be Difficult to Get to Know Locals.

In some countries, the locals will be warm and inviting, while in others, it might take a little more effort to make friends. If you’re concerned, find out in advance how Americans are typically received and treated in the area.

You May Experience Culture Shock – When You Return Home.

Once you become used to a foreign environment, your home might actually seem foreign to you. This effect will be most notable when returning from countries where cultural differences from your home are numerous.

Programs Can Be Expensive

While there are study abroad scholarships opportunities specifically designed for students who wish to study abroad, you may not be eligible. Is it worth racking up more student loan debt? If you don’t qualify for a scholarship, weigh the pros and cons to make the best decision, and be sure to expand your search – consult government-sponsored initiatives for further grants, if possible.

Credits May Not Transfer

If you’re planning to conduct research abroad, be sure to mention it to your college or university, as you may be able to transfer credits to your home institution. However, credits may not always transfer. This may not matter to some students, but to others it could be vital – especially when you consider the financial costs.
