Singapore- An Attractive Study Destination for Students

March 2019
Though Singapore is very small in size, the country has a booming and extremely stable economy. Singapore is counted among the top educational destinations in the world. Singapore offers a progressive education system with state-of-the-art facilities. The standard of education is excellent across all levels, starting right from the primary level. Apart from the public schools, Singapore also has 30+ international schools that follow the foreign education system for children of expatriates. The 5 autonomous universities of Singapore are ranked well globally and all other private institutes of higher education (PEIs) are regulated by the Council for Private Education (CPE.)

Singapore gets a lot of foreign investment because it has a skilled workforce, corruption-free society, low tax rates and well-developed infrastructure. The unemployment rate of the country is very low. Students choose Singapore as their study abroad destination because it has endless career opportunities. Apart from the international business investments, many reputed international universities have invested in Singapore.
Study in Singapore

Following are the reason for Singapore being an attractive study destination:-

No Language Barrier:

Singapore has a total of four national languages and English is one among them. Hence, language is not a problem here. It is quite easy and comfortable to get around in Singapore. International students can quickly adjust here because 75% of the country's population can speak English. Most importantly, the official language of education in Singapore is English. Therefore, international students don't feel alien here.

Moderate Climate:

Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate with no distinctive seasons. The temperature does not vary much and ranges from 22 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees. This moderate climate is conducive to living. It is a green city with the highest area under a cover of trees in spite of its urbanization. The moderate climate throughout the year makes it an attractive destination for students across the world.

Visa and Immigration:

International students wishing to study in Singapore will need to obtain a student visa. When you get your letter of approval, you will also be issued a visa by your institution. Within two weeks of your acceptance, you will need to apply to the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) for a Student Pass. This also needs to be no earlier than two months and no later than one month before the start to your course. This process will be done through the Student̢۪s Pass Online Application and Registration System (SOLAR). You will be given registration details by your institution, which you will use to fill in and submit the required forms. You will then need to complete the process once you have arrived in the country. To do this, you will need to make an appointment with the ICA and take with you the disembarkation/embarkation card that you were granted on entry to Singapore.

Standard of Living:

One of the areas where Singapore scores high is the standard of living. This is one of the reasons why expats from all over the world move to Singapore. In fact, Singapore is regarded as the easiest city to adjust in Asia, specifically for international students. Being home to a large number of foreigners, the well-known financial centre of Asia also offers a diverse background to international students.

Mixed Culture:

Singapore is a home to a variety of cultures. One is sure to experience different culture styles. It has a combination of Arab, Indian, Chinese and Malaysian cultures. Students get an opportunity to get exposed to and understand various cultures. This makes it easier for them to settle in the nation.

Pre-plan your Expenses to Study Abroad

March 2019
Realising the importance of acquiring high and rich qualifications, an increasing number of candidates now wish to earn an overseas degree. While the cost of an education may seem overwhelming to some, one can still afford to study abroad without breaking the bank. It is also important to note that the cost of living, currency and tuition vary depending on the location and university of choice. The following aspects should be kept in mind when planning your expenses for an overseas education.
Studying Abroad Programs

Scholarships:

Scholarships and other forms of financial aid are means of offsetting costs when studying abroad. While some scholarships provide partial assistance, there are others that cover tuition and living expenses. Applying early increases your chances of securing a scholarship. Take the time to scour for scholarships.

Exchange rates:

When looking to study overseas, the best way to get the most out of your home country's currency is to keep yourself updated with the latest rates. This will help you keep track of the amount you will be spending when overseas. Furthermore, Edwise has strong alliance with reputed foreign exchange dealers and ensures that students are offered best rates, along with the chance at an affordable education.

Credit cards:

Cashless forms of payment such as credit cards are widely accepted across countries and are useful for those initial expenses. When choosing a credit card, opt for one that has added benefits and allows for transactions at no hidden or additional costs. Often a credit card can be blocked if there are unusual purchase patterns, therefore it is important that you notify the credit card company of your travel plans before you set off for your education overseas.

Open a local bank account:

Opening a local bank account is a practical option for candidates who opt to study overseas. The reason being, money can be needed at any point of time for reasons small or big. Hence it is always wise to be prepared. A local account safeguards your finances, and allows for easy access to funds and payments without having to worry about exorbitant transaction and withdrawal fees. When choosing a bank, opt for one that fits in with your preferences.

Draw a Budget wisely:

Financial planning becomes very important once you start staying away from your home and that too in a foreign land. Managing expenses and saving money for unforeseen events in the future is of utmost importance. While everyone enjoys the thrill of experiencing life in a new country, it is important that you refrain from unnecessary buys. Creating weekly budgets, and listing items that you require on a monthly basis helps you prioritize your budget and spend wisely. It ensures a smooth and tension free stay.

Paying back your loan:

Student loans can differ in terms of interest rates and terms, and so it is important that you understand how your loan repayment plan works. There are various types of educational loans that are available to candidates at reasonable rates. Set up monthly payment plans to avoid late recurring charges. We at Edwise provide proper and detailed guidance on the various types of educational loans available, and will additionally provide you with an array of nationalized banks that offer loans to students at affordable rates.

Your Bachelor's/Master's Degree Via Pathway Program

March 2019
Pathway programs are recently gaining popularity due to the immense benefits they are providing to the international students. While many know the benefits of enrolling self in a Pathway Program, many are not even aware of what they are. So to start with…
Studying Abroad Programs

What are Pathway Programs?

These are programs/courses which are framed to help international students develop language skills and academic qualifications that prep and make them ready to start with their bachelor’s or master’s degree. Pathway Programs are generally 6-15 months long. Under these programs, the international students are taught subjects like Humanities, Liberal Arts, Business, Life Sciences, Engineering, etc. Out of many benefits, one of the most important benefits of a pathway program is that it develops strong English speaking, listening as well as reading skills of those who are weak in the language. The program helps students to communicate with their peers easily and fluently by removing the biggest barrier of language, out of their way.

Benefits of taking up a Pathway Program:

Understand the study environment and method:

Leaving your home country and landing on a foreign land to pursue higher education invites innumerable changes in one's life. One such prominent change is experienced in the education system of the new country. The education system of each country differs from that of the other. Some basic changes might include the way tests are written, class environment, class activities, etc. Hence adapting to the new system of education can take time. Pathway Programs provide you the time to adapt to the new system. One learns the new methods of studying and understanding and grasping knowledge. This helps the international students to fit in the new system.

Understand Country Culture:

By enrolling for a pathway program, students get the opportunity to understand the country culture in a formal and apt way. As you will be spending most of your time with other international students, the program will enable you and your fellow international mates to explore and understand the culture. Thus, a Pathway Program allows students to adapt to new culture, environment, surroundings, and people.

Enhance your knowledge:

Many a times, it so happens that you miss out on important knowledge required to study in the university. Pathway programs fill this gap by imparting you all the necessary knowledge. These programs majorly focus on preparing you for and teaching you all the concepts related to the field you have decided to choose as your major. Thus, the pathway programs ensure your holistic preparedness to excel in your course of bachelor’s/master’s degree.

Understand the teaching styles:

If education systems differ, the teaching styles will too. In many countries, it is not only the lecturer or professor that speaks, but the students interact too. This method is encouraged to boost student’s confidence and remove the fear of speaking openly. Most of the universities lay more stress on practical way of teaching rather than theoretical so that the students can efficiently grasp the concepts. Some universities also believe in a project/assignment intensive way of teaching students. Pathway programs introduce students to the new ways of teaching, enabling them to adapt to it. This makes it easy for the students to then study and understand what is taught in the curriculum of their bachelor's/master's program.

Gain time to choose a major:

Most of the students, even though decide to choose a major are many a times unsure. Some are even unable to decide between few best options they shortlist. When students face such dilemma, it is always beneficial to take up a pathway program. Pathway programs in most of the countries allow international students to study different courses in order to help students in making the right final decision of choosing a major.

A Pathway Program is usually a one year long course after which the students’ bachelor's/master's program commences. Thus, enrolling yourself for a Pathway Program comes with self-developmental opportunities which are crucial to study further.

Statement of Purpose V/S Personal Statement

March 2019
Prospective International students applying to foreign universities are expected to write a number of essays. The two most common and important of them all are the Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement. There is a lot of confusion revolving around the two. While many think that both forms of essays are one and the same, others believe that there exists a difference between the two.

A Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement though quiet similar, carry significant differences. Understanding these differences is crucial in order to draft the essay in the right format. Let's have a look at the differences:
Studying Abroad Programs

Let's have a look at the differences:

MOTIVE:

Statement of Purpose: The main motive behind writing an SOP is to let the admission committee know your reasons behind studying abroad in their university, your dreams and aspirations, your career goals and your future plan. A SOP highlights a student’s professional goals.

Personal Statement: The purpose of drafting a personal statement is to show your personal side to the admission committee. Through a personal statement, a student is expected to show/describe his/her personal traits. A Personal Statement sheds light on the personal background of a student.

LENGTH:

Statement of Purpose: An SOP is short in length as compared to the Personal Statement. The maximum word limit of an SOP is 800 words. Minimum being 500 words

Personal Statement: Unlike an SOP, a Personal Statement is longer in length which should have a maximum word limit of 1000. Minimum being 800 words

NATURE:

Statement of Purpose: SOP is more focused, strategic and to the point.

Personal Statement: This essay is descriptive in nature.

FLEXIBILITY:

Statement of Purpose: A SOP follows a specific pattern which should be written keeping in mind the course you apply for and your long term and short term goals. Everything one mentions in the SOP should be in line and in relation to the course applied for and future goals. Thus, while writing a SOP, one might have to face rigidity.

Personal Statement: As a Personal Statement is descriptive in nature, it is more flexible to draft than a SOP. This form doesn’t only focus on academics and goals, but also on the personal aspect of the applicant’s life.

CONTENT:

Statement of Purpose: In a Statement of Purpose a student is expected to mention his/her educational qualifications such as % scored in final year examinations, name of school, colleges or institutions from where he/she pursued those qualifications, workshops undertaken, participation in the extra-curricular activities, etc.

Personal Statement: A personal statement is majorly motivation driven. As mentioned earlier, it shows your personal side. In this form of essay students are expected to write about the challenges they have faced so far and ways in which they overcame these challenges and how have those challenges helped them to grow as person. One however need not restrict the personal statement only to talk about challenges. A student can also talk about inspirations that changed him/her as a person, about experiences that taught him/her lessons and developed his/her personality. Most importantly, in a Personal Statement, one must mention what it is it that has motivated him/her to reach this juncture of aspiring to study abroad.

TONE:

Statement of Purpose: A Statement of Purpose follows a proper essay format whose tone is formal and provides relevant information. A Statement of Purpose purely provides information about a student, information which is more academic and professional based, to the admission committee. One can say that it is a Resume explained in proper detail.

Personal Statement: A Personal Statement has a personal tone. While drafting a personal statement, one is expected to narrate a story of one’s life. A personal statement needs to talk to the readers. While reading, a reader should feel connected to the writer. A reader should be able to feel the emotions of the writer. A Personal Statement must have a personal touch to it.

COMMON FACTORS IN BOTH:

1.Both have a hidden purpose of convincing the admission officer of the applicant’s caliber to study in university.
2.Both focus on a student’s skills, interest and life at large.
3.Both forms of essays are divided into three parts which are the introduction, body and conclusion.
4.Both the essays are drafted to convey to the admission committee why and how an applicant stands out from a pool of applicants.

These two forms of essays are extremely crucial as it is the only chance applicants get to showcase themselves and convince the admission committee of being the perfect fit for the university, the reason being the existence of physical barrier/distance. So make sure to make the most of this opportunity.

A Simple Guide To Prepare For An International Education

February 2019
The hunger for top notch and well equipped educational infrastructure is escalating among the youth of India. According to the report released by the Government of India, currently there are around 5.53 lakh Indian students studying abroad in 86 countries, with a majority being in the USA UKCanada Australia and New Zealand

The youth is flying to international land at a rapid rate in order to gain a rich exposure of an amalgamation of high quality education, diverse cultures, vital employment prospects, and an overall holistic development of self. Moreover, with the employment conditions improving in India and innumerable options for financial assistance available, pursuing higher studies abroad from a foreign establishment has become really swift.

Additionally, the young Indian of today has efficiently decoded the benefits of international education; lifetime opportunity to learn and work in a global sector, introduction to new kind of education, understanding of the world and its ways broadly, learning and being exposed to varied cultures, being vulnerable to diverse opinions and thought processes, extensive networking with people belonging to different nationalities, skills to conduct yourself in professional spaces, self-growth, etc.

With the strong determination in mind to study abroad, prospective international students jump into the process of researching and applying to universities. The entire studying abroad process is long and exhausting. One needs to go about it carefully.
Study Abroad consultants

Here are a few easy tips to go about executing your study abroad plans:

Extensive Research:

Deciding to study abroad is a big step in life. Today with overseas education blooming all over, majority of countries and their universities are successfully offering a wide plethora of courses. In such a scenario, choosing the right country and university becomes crucial, which is why a detailed research is a must. In this stage, students must widen their horizons and look at all available options. Only after studying all these options should one make an informed decision.

Apply To The Universities:

After shortlisting the universities, students can start with their application process keeping in mind the dates of application and submission of the respective universities. The students can apply directly to the universities by visiting their website. Students are only expected to follow all the instructions as given by the university in order to proceed

Take The Required Proficiency Tests:

For studying a particular program, universities require you to pass a few tests in order for you to be eligible to apply for the program. Universities especially ask you to take English proficiency test that ensure your English speaking, reading and listening ability. The three major English Proficiency Tests are IELLTS, TOFLE, and PTE. Students are expected to take any one test out of the three which depends from university to university. Other tests are also required to be taken such as the GRE, GMAT, SAT, etc which are required by only some programs.

Ensure You Have A Well Drafted and Impactful CV:

Your CV is a textual image of your educational qualification, work experiences and skills. Make sure it is well structured, concise, precise, and free of grammatical errors. Your CV must speak high of you. Make sure that your CV adds weightage to your application.

Draft Your Own SOP (Statement Of Purpose) and Personal Statement:

This is one of the most important document every university demands as this is the only way the university gets a chance to know you. An SOP/Personal Statement is an essay which students are expected to draft. It is through this essay that students narrate their story and show themselves to the admission committee. While an SOP’s major focus is on education, career and future goals, a Personal Statement shows your personal side, along with your educational and professional background. Make sure that your essays talk with the admission committee. Your essays must have an impact.

Arrange And Sort Out All Your Documents Carefully:

Your documents are a very important component for getting admission abroad. Documents like your marksheets, identity proof, passport, financial statements, etc. need to be arranged and kept ready whenever required. Thus make sure all your documents are in place.

Visa Application:

Unless and until you don’t get a visa, you won’t be allowed to fly to the country of your dream. Proceed to this step cautiously. Fill in your visa application form with accurate details. Prepare for the interview by keeping your answers to the possible questions that can be asked, ready. Be confident enough in stating your reasons to study in a particular country and also your future goals. Your Statement of Intent should also strongly speak about the same.

Once a student gets his/her visa, he/she can prep to take off. Before that, doing a little background study of the country/city/town, common places to visit, stores to buy specific things from, culture, food, etc.
