Importance of Class Participation

Studying abroad means starting a whole new life as an international student. Students try to adapt to new surroundings, new teaching and new studying methods, new classmates, new environment, and new people can become ominous until students don't get to socialize with other people. Most of the time people get to socialize in classrooms or on campus, so make good use of it.

Active classroom participation is an important way of adapting to a new lifestyle. By communicating in class, students learn to express their points of view and ideas to the other students in a way that they can understand. When a student asks questions, they learn to obtain information to intensify their knowledge. Some people are introverts by nature while some lack confidence to speak to people that easily, so speaking in class can be a struggle for many students. This struggle might be explicit in the classroom in many ways like not answering questions, not volunteering in any activity, not asking for help from anyone, and not even talking to anyone in class at all. There are many ways to support active participation in the class, here are some.

·     Self-Confidence:

Many students get nervous to speak in front of a crowd of people. To overcome this fear, students need to push themselves and learn to speak in class.

Participating actively in the class will help students to build their confidence as well as make them comfortable speaking in front of a huge crowd. Having the quality to speak in front of people is important in the real world.

Confidence is an important accessory in human life and one should wear it.

·     Increase attention

Students need to interact with the professor and other classmates because listening to one long lecture can make a person lose interest. Interacting with the professor and the classmate will help the environment of the class be active. Asking questions, clearing doubts, and debating on topics will not make the class environment unexcited but will rather help students to focus on the lectures. This will in turn help them to increase their attention.

·     Engagement

While interacting and clearing doubts with the students helps them engage. Asking questions to the students or raising questions by the students will let other students think about the possible answers, and come up with tons of solutions. This leads to the analytical skill and the development of thinking in students. Thus class participation will help all the students to be engaged and help them know each other better.

·     Put Forth Opinions

Participating in class helps students to keep up with the topics that are being discussed. When students start paying attention in the class naturally they start thinking and analyzing the subjects and they start putting their thoughts into them. When the student's thoughts are different from the professor or any classmate’s, the student feels that their thoughts need to be expressed. At that time they can openly put forth their opinions. In this competitive world, having our own opinion is necessary to survive. Class participation helps students to fearlessly express opinions.

·     Ideas

From raising the question to expressing opinions with other classmates generate various ideas. These talks help students to understand how different individuals think. It also helps them in exchanging interesting knowledge, facts, and information that will help them in the future.

11 Most Common Mistakes in SOP

The stress of writing a brilliant and flawless Statement of Purpose to get admitted into an international institution is every student’s source of concern. A Statement of Purpose is a sure-fire way to make your application catch the eye and get into your dream university abroad. However, your SOP can also be your reason of rejection if not well drafted.

In this blog, we cover some of the most common mistakes while drafting an SOP, so that when you write down yours, you do not repeat them!

1. Hastening Your Sop

Drafting your SOP without giving it enough time is the most common mistake that an applicant can make when writing an SOP. An SOP reflects you as a person, your accomplishments, and your plans for the future. Take sufficient time to write, conduct groundwork, brainstorm concepts, and appropriately articulate your goal and purpose. Edit your document several times before submission to ensure that you do not repeat the same information or emphasize uncalled-for details.

2. Amorphous Writing

It is needless to be pretentious and extemporize. One common mistake made by a candidate is to write an SOP without a structure in mind. It is always best to scribble down a proper structure before you actually begin to write. Make an effort to think about your involvement in various extra-curricular activities or hobbies that are in line with your course of application.

3. Incorporating Untruthful Details

Adding false information is a big no. Don't try to exaggerate or lie about your accomplishments, as this could land you into serious trouble. The admission officers at the university authenticate every declaration made by you. Therefore, withholding information or lying about your scores or hiding backlogs will get you expelled from the university.

4. Boasting About Your Achievements

It is of utter importance to strike an appropriate balance between showcasing modesty and bragging. It is undeniable that your achievements make your SOP stand out, however, they need to be approached organically and in the correct context. It is always a plus to include your accomplishments, nevertheless, it is unnecessary to include every single accomplishment. For instance, if your course of application is MBA, you do not need to include your pass time in hobbies. Rather, place emphasis on your work experiences, academic projects, and volunteering activities reflecting your leadership and management skills.

5. Concentrating On The Inessentials

Every year heaps of SOPs are received for each course offered by the university, leaving them with minimal time to sift through your document. Thus, it is essential to get straight to the point and not beat around the bush. This problem can be evaded easily by developing an appropriate structure and writing down the points to be covered. Steer clear of going on and on, making use of jargon and flowery language, childhood fantasies, or absurd hobbies. You should also exclude common or generic statements like I am an honest and hardworking person. Alternatively, write about your future goals, aspirations, and how you will contribute to the university.

6. Not Adhering To The Word Limit

This is by far the most common mistake made by the applicants. To make an appearance of being smart and competent, applicants go the extra mile and surpass the word limit. SOPs with a word count of more than the stated limit does not necessarily make an application good, instead, it may increase the chances of rejection. So it is advised to adhere to the limit and choose your words wisely.

7. Focusing On The Negatives

As important as it is to acknowledge your failures, it is equally important to not stress about them. You need to come up with a healthy approach to present your failures so that the reader knows you possess the ability to overcome defeat and move on.

8. Making Use Of The Same Sop

Generally, study abroad aspirants apply to multiple universities concurrently and make the mistake of using the same SOP for applying to all of them. It is recommended to curate a different SOP for each university of application. This enables you to address the university and course specifically making your document look well-researched.

9. Not Proofreading The Document

Proofreading your SOP is the most obligatory facet. Multiple reading sessions to leave no room for spelling errors or grammatical blunders are necessary. Proofreading also helps in eliminating bland, repetitive sentences. Filter out errors and read the document manually so you don’t miss out on any mistakes.

10. Plagiarism

Plagiarism is another huge mistake for any applicant to get debarred. Plagiarism is considered to be a serious crime and universities reject applications on the grounds of plagiarised content. Personalize your SOP, and make sure your document is your original piece of work. Besides, if you make use of any quotes, give credits.

11. Not Asking For Help

Applicants often make the mistake of writing and submitting their SOP without anyone reviewing it. Approach a trusted family member or an acquaintance who has a strong command over language or the course of your application. You can also choose to seek professional help as it is an ideal approach to significantly enhance your chances of admission.

Choosing Homestay Accommodation During Study Abroad

Every single person is overwhelmed to begin their study abroad journey. Nevertheless, they feel nervous when the question arises about choosing to live in a homestay? Staying with a different and unknown family can be intimidating. The experience differs from that of your home. But one need not worry as there are multiple reasons to be excited about homestay accommodation even if the student may be required to adjust to the climate, culture and customs, and homesickness. The student may have a lot to comprehend while he/she considers homestay accommodation but, Edwise is just one call away to help you embark on your journey to find your next home.

Ensures Safety: When one decides to study abroad, the question of safety arises in both, parents and students. The student can be assured that host families are carefully chosen by their homestay partners when they take into consideration homestay as their overseas accommodation. Parents can have peace of mind and can worry less while their child explores his/her new surroundings and life as an international student. For one who is not used to living out of his/her family home, homestay can be a right decision as someone is constantly there to keep a watch on you. The transition to life abroad can be made a bit easier for the student by having someone who asks, 'How was your day?', have dinner together as one family and by spending time with your new friends.

Faster Improvement in one’s language skills: When one decides to study abroad he/she meets new and diverse people, immerses himself/herself in a new culture etc. When one decides upon homestay accommodation, he/she is not just surrounded by different people, food and cultures, but also with a foreign language. The student gets to be a part of realistic conversations each day. On the other hand, the host family that one resides with will also show interest in learning his/her (student’s) culture and language. This may begin from commemorating your country’s holidays, festivities and special occasions while at the same time learning theirs! The student can acquire knowledge about his/her host family’s way of living by learning local customs and visiting places of attraction together.

Reduced feeling of homesickness: At times, even the one’s who travel independently become homesick. The student may miss the family dinners he used to be a part of, his/her friend’s birthdays, and festivals celebrated in his home country. In many such circumstances the student’s host family can be exceptionally helpful in supporting him/her. At times they may even spend time with the student at a local restaurant having dinner to divert the student’s mind from being homesick.

Makes one independent: Staying with a host family does not mean that the student won’t get his/her freedom. Few students at times assume that their desired freedom will be curtailed or be paired with strict host families, and thus, they fear choosing a homestay. Host parents however, understand that the student wants to explore the city while he/she resides there. The student should just let the host family know if he/she is going out somewhere, returning home late or staying at a friend’s place. They should be informed about the same before hand. Doing so will enable the student to not only maintain a good affinity with the host family but also allow him/her to go on his/her own adventures during his/her time abroad. In this manner, the student is provided the right balance between an independent living whilst at the same time having someone to take care of him or her.

Budget friendly: Cost is one of the most appealing factors about homestay. Homestay incorporates more than just a roof over your head- right from safety, adventures with an overseas family, their counsel, utility services and meals, all at an economical cost. Thus you can save more money for your weekend getaways, experiences, and tours.

One deciding to study overseas should thus, opt for homestay accommodation.

Documents To Be Presented When One Embarks On Their Study Abroad Journey

In today's times, ample opportunities are available for international students in foreign countries. Thus, many students from across the globe aim to study abroad in order to boost their living standards and take their careers to new heights. Going to another country to pursue higher education is a challenging and daunting task mainly due to various family and personal reasons. Nonetheless, the moment one realizes the amenities and facilities available in the other country, there remains no reason why not to travel to a foreign country.

One is met with multiple advantages when one embarks on his/her journey to study abroad. He/she meets a diverse range of people and makes new friends, gets immersed in a new and completely different culture, learns a new language, is able to visit astounding places, discovers new and exciting foods, and most importantly becomes independent and self-reliant.

Before making your study overseas journey a memorable and enduring experience, there are multiple things or factors to consider. International students have to take charge and are required to acquire information concerning all documents that are needed to file for a student visa. Only after fulfilling the college or university requirements, one is eligible to embark on his/her study abroad journey.

To make your journey a success, the following are the required documents:

Application Form: The most crucial document that contains personal as well as professional details of the student, the Application Form pertains to that specific college or university that the student is applying to. The student is required to fill in the application form carefully with the correct information before forwarding it to the college or university. One should double-check before submitting the form. This makes it easier for the Admissions Officer to go through the student's application.

Test Scores: At majority of the universities and colleges abroad, English is the medium of instruction, and therefore, to ensure that the student can speak, read and write in English apart from being able to converse, they demand the English Language Proficiency i.e. the IELTS or TOEFL test scores. The student is required to submit these scores along with the application. These scores vary across universities and can affect the student's chances of seeking admission into his/her desired college or university.

The student might also need to appear for more general standardized tests like GRE or SAT depending on his/her country and university choice.

Academic Transcripts: The student is required to submit their academic records along with the application form. It is the same as the consolidated mark sheet that we receive in India comprising all the courses undertaken by the student, grades obtained, credits, and degrees earned. One pursuing postgraduate programs should submit their SSC (Senior Secondary Certificate), HSC (Higher Secondary Certificate), and the Graduation Degree Certificate, along with the required mark sheets.

Curriculum Vitae (CV): The Resume/CV is one of the most important documents to be submitted. It contains information about the student's educational background, internships or work experience, extracurricular activities, degrees, skills, etc., and is used to seek admission or to secure a new job. The Resume or Curriculum Vitae provides a comprehensive insight into the student's academic and professional profile. The university or college takes into consideration the presentation skills and the manner in which one performs during an interaction over a video conference call. Based on the resume put forth by the candidate, this discussion takes place.

Statement of Purpose: The most important document of one's application, the SOP is a short essay written by the student. It describes the student's background, the reason for them wanting to pursue that particular course, their desired university, and their future aspirations. The university wishes to know why the student has selected their campus to study the said program. A well-written SOP paves the way for a student's entry into his/her dream university and thus, the student should invest ample time in writing the essay to make his/her application stand out from the crowd. It evaluates the capabilities of a prospective student in terms of critical thinking, analytical abilities, aims, interests, and future goals. The SOP should be short, to the point, and ideologically clear.

Passport Size Photos and Photo Identity: Pan card, Driving License, or Voter's ID are the different photo identity documents that are needed for the purpose of identification and proof of residence. Student's also required to send a clear picture with a certain background as demanded by the university or college. All instructions given by the institute should be met.

Letter of Recommendation: LOR is also known as a Reference Letter. It is written on behalf of the student by either the student's Manager or Professor, as requested by him/her. Here the writer talks about the qualities of the person, his/her skills, characteristics, and experience based on the individual's ability to perform a given task. The writer also testifies the individual's contribution to the workplace or college. The LOR relates to admission to higher education institutes, scholarship, or employment eligibility. The Admission Committee gains an insight into the individual's life and can decide one's admission subsequently through the Letter of Recommendation.

Work Experience Certificate: The student's pertinent work experience certificates need to be attached. This plays an important role in making the student better understand the program and the experience gained, adds more weightage. A student intending to pursue MBA should submit his/her work experience details along with the necessary documents. The work experience documents include: Latest Joining Letter, Latest Salary Slip, and Employment Certificates from previous Companies or Employers.

Travel and Financial Documents: Students should possess a valid passport and study visa to be able to travel to their preferred destination. They should show proof of funds that state that they can take care of themselves in case of an emergency. Few documents need to be sent within the time frame prescribed by the university/college.
