Importance of Class Participation

Study abroad means starting a whole new life as an international student. Students try to adapt to new surroundings, new teaching and new studying methods, new classmates, new environment, new people can become ominous until students don't get to socialize with other people. Most of the time people get socialize in classrooms or on campus, so make good use of it.

Active classroom participation is an important way of adapting to the new lifestyle. Communicating in class, students learn to express their points of view and ideas to the other students in a way that they can understand. When a student asks questions, they learn to obtain information to intensify their knowledge. Some people are introverts by nature while some lack confidence to speak to people that easily, so speaking in class can be a struggle for many students. This struggle might be explicit in the classroom in many ways like not answering questions, not volunteering to any activity, not asking help from anyone and not even talking to in class at all. There are many ways to support active participation in the class, here are some.

·     Self-Confidence:

Many students get nervous to speak in front of a crowd of people. To cover the fear, students need to push themselves and learn to speak in class.

While participating actively in the class, will help students to build their confidence make them comfortable to speak in front of the major crowd. Having the quality to speak in front of people is important in the real world.

Confidence is an important accessory in human life and one should wear it.

·     Increase attention

Students need to interact with the professor and other classmates because listening to one long lecture can make a person lose interest. While interacting with the professor and the classmate will help the environment of the class be active. Asking questions, clearing doubts, debating on topics will not make the class environment unexcited and help students focus on the lectures, therefore it will help them to increase their attention.

·     Engagement

While interacting and clearing doubts with the students helps them engaging. Asking questions to the students or raising questions by the students will let other students think about the possible answers, doing dots and come up with tons of solutions. This leads to the analytical skill and the development of thinking in students. Thus class participation will help all the students engaging and help them know each other better.

·     Put Forth Opinions

While participating in class helps students to keep up with the topics that are being discussed. When students start paying attention in the class naturally they start thinking and analyzing the subjects and they start putting their thoughts into it. When the student's thoughts are different from the professor or any classmates, the student feels that their thoughts need to be expressed at that time they can openly put forth their opinions. In this competitive world, having our own opinion is necessary to survive. Class participation helps students to fearlessly express opinions.

·     Ideas.

From raising the question to expressing opinions with other classmates generate various ideas. These talks help students to understand how different individual thinks. It also helps them in exchanging interesting knowledge, facts and information that will help them in the future.

Good Study Habits College Students Should Adopt During Their Studies Overseas

The decision to study overseas is a major one. Everyone wishes to excel in whatever one undertakes and thereby be successful in the future. While studying abroad, students should adopt the following habits in order to earn good grades and emerge victorious.

Take down notes and review the same

• Learning is a life long process and is limited not just to textbooks. Reading newspapers, novels, magazines or even articles on the internet enables one to understand things taking place all over the world as well as around us. This in turn can contribute to one’s knowledge.

• One should get into the habit of taking notes, be it during a lecture or even while reading something assigned to you.

• This helps students to understand the lesson better. Taking notes aids in absorbing key terms and ideas more efficiently.

• One should also review the notes after class in order to retain the information. Reviewing while the material is still fresh in your mind, enables one to learn the material taught that day, more effectively.

• In case one misses a lecture, one should ask one’s classmates for a refresher.

• One should get into the habit of rewriting lecture notes. This is one of the most clever methods of study one should practice. Rewriting will aid one in remembering the context better. On the other hand, restructuring the notes compels one to understand the lesson.

Organize the class materials

• One should avoid keeping a bulky bookbinder or even a backpack of all loose sheets.

• Instead, the student should very neatly organize his/her study materials- books, stationery, notes and handouts and put the same into different folders.

• This enables one to very easily find what one requires for each exam as well as keep one’s homework together which in turn, helps to avoid massive clutter. One should color-code as this helps to differ between the topics and keep different topics separately.

• Take some time out and make sure the folders are in order. Also, download the readings and slides for each lecture in advance. This helps save time.

Avoid any form of distraction during studies

• One can gain access to large amounts of information, thanks to Technology. However, this useful tool can in turn, create distractions and prevent one from focusing on one’s research.

• After acquiring the necessary information to write, one should keep one’s phone on silent and switch off the wireless connection.

• Social media platforms are used today by almost everyone. Communicating on the same or talking over the phone could sap away one’s time for a good 20–30 minutes.

• On the other hand, upon receiving a notification, one is bound to immediately open it. One may also be required to reply to the same. This could also result in time loss.

• One can get distracted very easily. In such scenarios, avoid using your phone. Keep it out of sight while studying.

• Prioritize your education. Your friends can wait.

• Distractions can lead to ineffective studying as one losses the train of thought and is unable to focus.

• Before you sit down to study, find a corner with little/ no background noise. This will prevent you from getting disturbed or distracted.

Build an effective study environment around yourself

• The next step after organizing your notes and required study material is to create a place of study, free from distractions be it your roommates or the television, a place where one can get motivated and concentrate better on one’s studies.

• This place could be on campus, in a cafe, at home or at the beach.

• At times, study sessions with classmates may benefit you.

• Prepare a timetable and spend extra time on independent study per subject even if you just have 12/15 ‘contact hours’ on campus.

• Try changing your study routine. If you rely only on textbook revision, consider switching this routine to creating visual resources viz. flash cards or mind apps.

Study abroad updates: U.K. has moved India from the ‘Red’ to ‘Amber’ list.

As the pandemic raged on, the United Kingdom (UK) was one of the worst affected countries. The UK was forced to announce a nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of a UK variant of Covid 19. Most universities in UK shifted their operations online so as to not disrupt the administration of its courses.

As India faced a very brutal second wave of infections, the UK put India on a ‘Red List’, which is a traffic light system for international travel. As a Tier 4 (student visa) has residential rights, aspiring Indian students were met with a sigh of relief for their education abroad as they could travel to the country, but however, the cost of quarantine proved to cause financial strain.

On August 5, 2021, the U.K. Transport Secretary tweeted, “The UAE, Qatar, India, and Bahrain will be moved from the red list to the amber list. All changes come into effect Sun 8th August at 4 a.m.”

Based on the rules issued by the UK Government for countries on the ‘Amber List’, here are the guidelines that arriving passengers have to adhere to:

With effect from August 8, 2021, for India:

- Arriving passengers have to take a COVID-19 test, a minimum of three days before departure, and book two Covid tests in advance, which will be taken upon arrival in the UK, and present a complete Passenger Locator Form on arrival.

- Arriving passengers will have to home quarantine at the address mentioned on their Passenger Location Form. They will be required to take a COVID-19 test on or before day two and on or after day eight of quarantine.

- Highlighting relief for fully vaccinated passengers, the UK Government also stated “fully vaccinated in the U.K. or under the U.K. vaccine program overseas; under 18 on the day, you arrive in England and resident in the U.K. or in a country with a vaccination program approved by the U.K. and part of a U.K.-approved vaccine trial”. Covid shield, the India-manufactured Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, is likely to be covered under this exemption.

This relaxation announced by the UK is a big win for students who want to travel for their study in UK. We strongly advise students to be fully vaccinated before they travel with vaccines approved by the respective study destination as this will exempt them from mandatory quarantine upon arrival.

Students can still apply to courses in UK and achieve their study abroad dreams. Over the years the number of students who choose to study in USA has significantly risen. With this increased competition, students need to go the extra mile to make their applications stand out. If you too are looking to stand apart from the rest, here are some factors that you need to take into consideration.

Scholastic Ability

· A determining component of your application to study at universities in USA is your GPA and CGPA. Thus, offer immense prominence to your academics.

Scores in University Admission Tests

· To study in USA, students need to appear for certain admission tests. These include the likes of English Proficiency tests such as the IELTS/TOEFL/PTE and other admission tests such as the GRE/GMAT/SAT and ACT.

· IELTS score of 6.0- 6.5 for Undergraduates and 6.5–7 band for Postgraduate studies is usually sought after.

· In your Statement of Purpose, apart from covering your academic and professional background, also offer insights as to why you wish to study in USA in that course at that particular university.

· Based on your academic and professional background, universities will ask for 2–3 LOR’s. Ensure that your LOR, speaks highly about your skills and attributes.

Selecting the Right University

· Whilst through the entire process you’re trying to fit into your university, what is also important to consider is whether the university is the right fit for you.

· Though university rankings hold prominence, what you also need to check is the survey, student-faculty ratio, courses offered, research activities and alumni network to name a few.

Course Specific Requirements
